Garbha Sanskara added to the ante-natal care at Banaras Hindu University

The story and background and literature from Ayurveda has inspired the doctors in Banaras Hindu University as they have started practices of garbha sanskar therapy as a part of antenatal care during the final month of the pregnancy. Under the therapy, pregnant women will be given spiritual music therapy, Veda therapy, meditation therapy, and worship therapy.

Garbha Sanskar is one the 16 sanskaras in Ayurveda which mainly focuses 'education in the womb'.

"Pregnant women are told to listen to sacred music, read Vedas, and perform spiritual activities such as pujas and meditation. We also advise them to eat nutrient-rich food and stay fit so that a healthy child is delivered," Sunita Suman, Prasuti Tantra (Maternity Department), Ayurveda told Indian express.

While garbha sanskar has its origin in Hinduisim, doctors pointed out to the overall benefits of the practice for a pregnant lady. Explaining the same Dr. S K Mathur, the medical superintendent of Sir Sundar Lal Hospital of BHU told the daily, "It does not have to be religious. It can be anything that is considered good by the mother and other specialists. We have also been using instrumental music," 

"Garbh sanskar is not a new thing. In Ayurveda, it has been performed since long. In the absence of its scientific validation, the practice didn't get due importance. Now, garbh sanskar therapy has been restarted in the department of prasuti tantra (obstetrics), in the faculty of Ayurveda," he further explained to HT

He also mentioned that this ancient practice was discontinued in modern medicine due to a lack of scientific evidence. So at IMS-BHU with an intend to validate it scientifically this practice is given since September last week. four to five expecting mothers are explained and given this therapy daily.
