PM Modi's Sweden visit strengthens global Ayurveda collaboration
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Sweden on May 17, 2026, in the city of Gothenburg has brought renewed global attention to Ayurveda and holistic healthcare cooperation between India and the Nordic nations. While the high-level talks primarily focused on trade, innovation, and strategic partnerships, the visit also sparked growing discussions around the global expansion of Ayurveda, with wellness experts and healthcare representatives describing it as a major opportunity to strengthen India-Sweden collaboration in preventive and traditional medicine.
Ayurveda Sweden Association (ASA) Chairperson Ms. Stina Andersson described the visit as a major opportunity to promote Ayurveda across Sweden and Europe. She said increasing collaboration between India and Sweden could help integrate Ayurveda into mainstream discussions on preventive healthcare, wellness, and healthy living. Andersson stated that Sweden’s growing interest in traditional Indian medicine reflects changing global healthcare priorities, reports Deshbandhu.
Ms. Andersson said the visit could create new opportunities for Indian Ayurvedic doctors, therapists, and wellness experts to collaborate with Swedish healthcare institutions and research organisations. She also noted that Swedish citizens are showing greater interest in learning about Ayurveda, yoga, and holistic healing systems in India. According to her, cooperation agreements between countries help improve awareness and understanding of traditional healthcare systems, reports Amar Ujala.

The Ayurveda Sweden Association chief highlighted the increasing relevance of Ayurveda in addressing lifestyle-related illnesses, including stress, obesity, and chronic health disorders. She said Ayurveda focuses on preventive healthcare through balanced nutrition, healthy routines, and natural healing practices. Andersson also suggested integrating Ayurveda with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and nanotechnology to improve healthcare accessibility and efficiency in the future.
Interest in Ayurveda has been steadily rising in Sweden and other European countries. Earlier this year, a Swedish delegation visited the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA) in Panchkula to study Ayurvedic treatment systems, patient care practices, and educational programmes. The visit reflected increasing international curiosity about India’s traditional healthcare methods and their role in complementary medicine.
Swedish Prime Minister Mr. Ulf Kristersson and Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi discussed strengthening bilateral ties through strategic partnerships and expanding collaboration in healthcare, research, and emerging technologies.
