Ease of Living Index: Delhi ranks last in health category

New Delhi: Delhi was ranked 65th on livability index among 111 major cities in the country, while it came last in the health category, according to a survey released by the Centre today.

The 'Ease of Living Index', the first-ever exercise undertaken by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, ranked the country's major cities on the basis of four parameters -- governance, social, economic and physical infrastructure.

Delhi scored 33.18 out of 100 in the institutional, social, economic and physical criterion.

The national capital, which has a population of around 1.12 crore, stood last in the health category with the 111 rank. In the governance category, it has been ranked 19, while in the education category, it secured the 59th position.

Chandigarh has been ranked 18 in the education category.

In social pillar like educational and health institutions, Delhi came 71, while it stood at 109 in the economic pillar.

Releasing the index, Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the assessment was first of its kind globally in terms of scale and coverage, and the ranking marks a shift to a data-driven approach to urban planning and management and promotes healthy competition among cities.

Meanwhile, Delhi's Anand Vihar Railway Station has been ranked five and New Delhi station 39, respectively, on cleanliness parameters in a survey released by the Railway Ministry on the cleanest stations in the country.
