New Delhi:  The Dental Council of India  has sent a notice to the Principals of all the Dental Colleges of India to furnish a certified copy of the accreditation certificate issued by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), at the earliest.

DCI has issued similar circulars to the colleges in the past asking to submit a copy of the Accreditation Certificate but most of the colleges have failed to comply with the directions of the council. Taking a serious view in the matter, DCI has sent a reminder to the colleges directing them to act expeditiously.

It is to be noted that the Accreditation of Dental Institutions in the country by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has been made mandatory by the DCI since 2007. The regulation is an extract of the Dental Council of India (Miscellaneous) Regulations, 2007 which states as follows:-

"9. Accreditation of Dental Institutions in the country by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is mandatory."

DCI is the apex body to monitor dental education in the country, but unlike all other higher education regulatory bodies, it does not have an independent body of its own for accreditation of dental colleges. A NAAC Accreditation certificate is a step towards improving the standard of dental education as per international norms. NAAC tag has been made mandatory for medical and para-medical colleges as well.

NAAC accreditation sets uniform standards for infrastructure, faculty size, patient care, and research in all dental colleges although the minimum requirements of the regulatory councils the Dental Council of India is a pre-requisite for recognition.

A NAAC grade gives students and patients a broad idea of the comparative standards of the institutions in the country.
