Fact Check
The claim is FALSE. Coriander seeds may help with pain and ease menstrual discomfort, but no scientific evidence supports the claim that coriander water induces periods within a day.
What are Periods?
Periods also known as mensuration, menses, or “that time of the month,” is a natural biological process that occurs in females during their reproductive years. It involves a recurring cycle of physical and hormonal changes in the body. Typically starting between the ages of 12 and 15, it signals the onset of puberty and continues until menopause, which usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 50. Each individual experiences menstruation differently.
What Is Irregularity in Periods?
A typical menstrual period lasts between 2 to 7 days and recurs every 21 to 35 days. However, around 14–25% of women experience irregular periods. This can include periods that are unusually heavy or light, arrive too early or too late, involve intense cramping, or are unpredictable in timing. Some may notice spotting between cycles or even miss periods for 3 to 6 months. Such irregularities are often linked to hormonal imbalances, particularly in estrogen and progesterone. Common causes include Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), contraceptive use, breastfeeding, intense physical activity, thyroid disorders, and intrauterine devices (IUDs). Lifestyle factors like obesity, stress, and smoking may also contribute
Can Periods Be Induced Within a Day?
In certain situations, if your period is already due or approaching, it may begin naturally in a day. However, in cases involving PCOS, PCOD, thyroid issues, or stress-related disruptions, it is not medically feasible to induce menstruation within a single day. These conditions typically need appropriate evaluation and treatment by a healthcare professional. Additionally, if pregnancy has occurred, menstruation does not take place.
What Are the Health Benefits of Coriander?
Coriander is valued in both culinary and traditional medicine. Various parts of the plant—including its seeds, leaves, roots, and fruits—are used for different therapeutic purposes. Traditionally, coriander seeds have been used to ease pain, inflammation, and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
The seeds are also commonly used to support digestion, relieve gas, nausea, diarrhea, and indigestion. These benefits are thought to come from coriander's ability to stimulate the liver to produce bile and digestive enzymes, enhancing digestion and gut motility
Does Drinking Coriander Water Induce Periods Within a Day?
Coriander is known for their potential health benefits, including reducing pain and inflammation. Some studies suggest they may help alleviate menstrual cramps. However, there is no scientific evidence or medical consensus supporting the claim that drinking coriander water can induce periods within a day.
A review in Frontiers in Pharmacology highlights coriander's anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects, which could help with menstrual discomfort, but it makes no mention of regulating or triggering menstruation.
Similarly, a review in the International Journal of Research in Ayurveda and Pharmacy notes that coriander may aid hormone secretion and reduce menstrual pain, yet it does not link the herb to menstrual regulation.
Currently, no scientific evidence confirms that coriander water can induce periods within a day, and no medical consensus endorse this claim.
Dr. Sandhya Rani, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Aster Women & Children Hospital, Bengaluru, told Medical Dialogues, "Coriander water may have certain medicinal benefits like reducing pain during periods because it has antispasmodic activity. It may also ease the discomfort of the women because it helps in digestion and the bloating may come down. But inducing periods is a myth because it does not have any hormonal effect. So, I do not think that taking coriander water can induce periods. It's not that easy. Periods come because of various hormonal changes. It is always suggestible to lead a good lifestyle and regularize your periods rather than using short-term solutions like coriander water."
To this Dr. Shruthi Kalagara, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Motherhood Hospitals in Sarjapur, Bangalore added, "Let's bust this myth today. Drinking coriander seed water or any home remedy does not make your periods come. Here's the real deal. You need to ovulate first. If ovulation happens and there is no pregnancy, then your body will naturally get a period. So, instead of focusing on quick fix drinks, we need to address the root cause, whether you are ovulating regularly or not."
Medical Dialogues Final Take
Coriander offer several health benefits, such as relieving pain and inflammation. Although some studies indicate they may help ease menstrual cramps and support hormone balance, there is no scientific studies or medical consensus that drinking coriander water can induce periods within a day. Current evidence only supports its role in reducing menstrual discomfort not regulating or triggering menstruation immediately.
Hence, the claim is FALSE.
