National Medical Commission: Meet the new regulators

New Delhi: With the National Medical Commission (NMC) replacing the Medical Council of India (MCI), the state of affairs has now fallen under the guidance of Dr Suresh Chandra Sharma, who will now take his charge as the Chairman of NMC.

Dr Sharma is a retired HoD, ENT, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi. He has been appointed by new apex medical regulator as the Chairman for a period of three years with effect from the 25th day of September 2020.

Born in 1955, Dr Suresh Chandra Sharma did MBBS from SMS Medical College, Jaipur (Rajasthan), and MS (ENT) from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, (PGIMER) Chandigarh. After this, he worked as Faculty at PGI Chandigarh in various capacities till March 2000 when he joined the ENT department of AIIMS New Delhi. Since then, he has been an integral part of AIIMS, New Delhi and credited with various developments at the department

At AIIMS along with Head & Neck Surgery, he developed Skull base surgery, and surgery for Head & neck Paraganglioma, Cochlear implant, Robotic and minimal invasive Surgery for Head & Neck tumours. He is actively involved in basic research in the field of Oral cancer and Cholesteatoma has numerous national, international accolades to his credit. Besides his charge has HOD at AIIMS, he has also been nominated as President of AIIMS, Jodhpur, by the Government of India.

Meanwhile, Dr Rakesh Kumar Vats, who was previously the secretary-general in the board of governors of the Medical Council of India (MCI), now has been appointed as the secretary of the Commission for the similar term.

Medical Dialogues has recently reported about the dissolution of the MCI and the NMC now replacing it for development and regulation of all aspects of medical education and profession. With the NMC coming into being, the Board of Governors (BoG), which superseded the Medical Council of India (MCI) on September 26, 2018, to perform its functions, will get dissolved and the nearly 64-year-old Indian Medical Council Act will stand abolished.

The NMC comprises a chairman, 10 ex-officio members and 22 part-time members. The ex-officio members include presidents of the four autonomous boards.

The four autonomous boards under the NMC Act -- the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB), Post-Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB), Medical Assessment and Rating Board and the Ethics and Medical Registration Board -- have also been constituted. The notification names presidents of four autonomous boards under the NMC as follows – Dr Aruna Vanikar, HoD Pathology; Dr GR Doshi, Institute of Kidney Diseases, Ahmadabad (UG medical board); Dr MK Ramesh, Head, surgery at Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (PG medical education board); Dr Achal Gulati, Director Principal, BR Ambedkar Medical College, Delhi; and Dr BN Gangadhar, Director of NIMHANS Bangalore as the president of medical ethics and registration board.
