JIPMER: Doctors breathe easy with court proceedings now online

Puducherry: A Tele-evidence service has recently been introduced in the Jawaharlal institute of postgraduate medical education and research (Jipmer). Doctors can now attend a court case without leaving the hospital premises and as a result save on time and money travelling to appear in person before the courts for various medico legal cases as they previously would do. The high- tech facility allows them to submit their findings as well as opinions through real time video conferencing. On the other hand, courts too are benefited as aresult of the facility. The resolution of court cases will now be expedited, as the non availability of doctors on specific dates due to patient appointments etc will cease to be a hindrance.

A Jipmer doctor furnished his findings and opinions in a medico-legal case before a Punjab court through the tele-evidence service a few days ago, said Jipmer director Dr S C Parija.

Equipped with  the necessary infrastructure, Jipmer was declared as regional resource centre for telemedicine for more than 160 medical colleges of South Indian states including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Puducherry in 2013.

Created in accordance with the guidelines and norms of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the innovative step brings relief to the already over worked doctor.

The state of art Tele-evidence infrastructure, which is essentially the integration of telemedicine with telejustice, at JIPMER includes; HD video conferencing system, desktop video conferencing system, interactive smart board, digital X-ray scanner, LCD monitors, IP PTZ Camera, mobile telemedicine van, head-mounted video camera, Wi-Fi routers and spectacle-mounted video camera.

The Post-graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh was the first to go ahead with implementing the advanced tele-evidence facility, where so far, it has been a success.
