MCI Board of Governors Clarify on Who Can sign Laboratory Reports

New Delhi: Settling the matter on the issue of " Who can sign Laboratory Report?", the Medical Council of India recently communicated its decision dispelling any ambiguity arising out of the order of the Hon'ble Supreme Court order that stated that "Laboratory Report can be counter signed only by a registered medical practitioner with a post graduate qualification in pathology"

It is reported that after the decision of the Supreme Court, the Association of Medical Biochemists of India approached the Delhi High court, with objections asking the court to direct MCI to clarify on the matter. The association before the court pointed out that in order to ascertain different diseases or the health of the human body through laboratory tests, three broad streams of medical science with specialization are available i.e. (1) Pathology (2) Biochemistry & (3) Microbiology. Hence,medical practitioners possessing postgraduate qualification in the aforesaid specialties of (1) Pathology (2) Biochemistry & (3) Microbiology - are entitled to sign / counter sign a laboratory reports pertaining to their respective specialties.
