Vitamin D is an essential fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in a few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. Deficiency of vitamin D is associated not only with bone and muscle disorders but it has a critical role in many infectious and noninfectious diseases.

Several studies and literature suggest vitamin D deficiency in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients and hypovitaminosis D may aggravate the disease severity in HIV patients by compromising the immune system.

 Clinical Nutrition journal reports  a study were Calcidiol supplementation is credibly a promising adjuvant of combination anti-retroviral therapy (cART) for the treatment of HIV  and that vitamin D can function as an immune modulator in HIV.
