PM Modi announces 75,000 new medical seats to be added in the next 5 years
Lamenting that middle-class students go abroad to pursue medical education, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation on Independence Day on Thursday, promised to create 75,000 more medical seats over the next five years, adding to the existing over one lakh seats in the country.
"In the last 10 years we have increased the number of medical seats to nearly 1 lakh in the country," PM Modi said while delivering his eleventh Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

Only 1 medical college in Gujarat gets NMC renewal, 37 institutes still await approval
Among the 38 existing medical colleges in Gujarat, only one has received the National Medical Commission's (NMC) annual renewal permission.
TOI has reported that only one private medical college in Kalol has received the required renewal permission from the Commission so far, while the remaining 37 colleges are still awaiting for the Commission's nod.

Chhattisgarh DME unveils NEET 2024 counselling schedule; registration starts on August 18
The Directorate of Medical Counselling (DME), Chhattisgarh is going to begin the National Eligibility and Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 counselling. On this, DME Chhattisgarh has released the tentative schedule of the NEET-UG 2024 counselling state quota.
As per the schedule, the NEET-UG 2024 counselling will begin on August 18, 2024, and end on October 26, 2024, at 5 PM. With this, the registration process will begin from August 18, 2024, and will continue till August 24, 2024. Below is the detailed schedule-

Chhattisgarh DME Releases Tentative NEET 2024 Counselling Schedule, Registration Begins On August 18
NMC task force recommends capping medics' weekly work at 74 hours with weekly days off
Noting that excessive duty hours affect the physical and mental health of medical students and compromise patient safety, the National Medical Commission's Task Force for Mental Health and Well-being of Medical Students has recommended that the resident doctors should not work more than 74 hours per week, and no more than 24 hours at a stretch.
In its report, which has recently been made public, the Task Force has also recommended that the resident doctors should be given one day off per week, a 24-hour duty, and 10-hour shifts for the remaining five days. As per the report, it is crucial to ensure medical students get 7-8 hours of daily sleep for their mental and physical health.

19 arrested for mob violence during Kolkata protests at RG Kar Medical College
Kolkata Police on Friday said it has so far arrested 19 people in connection with the vandalism and violence at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in the metropolis. Those arrested were remanded to police custody by a city court till August 22, officials said.
Taking to social media Kolkata Police said, "19 arrests so far in RG Kar hospital vandalism. Five of them were identified by social media feedback. If you recognise any of the suspects from our earlier posts, kindly inform us. Thank you for your support and trust."

Phase 3 clinical trial for India's first indigenous dengue vaccine begins
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Panacea Biotec have announced the initiation of the first-ever Phase 3 clinical trial for a dengue vaccine in India. This landmark trial will evaluate the efficacy of India's indigenous tetravalent dengue vaccine, DengiAll, developed by Panacea Biotec. The first participant in this trial was vaccinated at Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak.
Commenting on this milestone, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Shri J.P. Nadda, said, “The initiation of this Phase 3 clinical trial for India's first indigenous dengue vaccine marks a critical advancement in our fight against dengue. It reflects our commitment to protecting our citizens from this pervasive disease and underscores India's capabilities in vaccine research and development. Through this collaboration between ICMR and Panacea Biotec, we are not only taking a step towards ensuring the health and well-being of our people but also reinforcing our vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat in the healthcare sector.”
