Medical council of India to look into Harassment of Junior Residents at Medical Colleges
New Delhi: With growing instances of harassment against junior doctors being reported from across the country, the apex medical regulator, Medical Council of India, has been appealed to look into the matter and provide the younger generation of doctors with help and justice.
The council acting on the issue has in turn forwarded the complaints to the Academic Committee of the Council asking it to respond within three months.
It is reported that a representation was received by the Medical Council of India by a group of junior residents pointing out to the discrimination (Shoshan), humiliation ( Apmaan), assault ( Maarpeet) as well as housework that the junior doctors were subjected to along with the inhuman and animal-like behaviour against junior doctors in most of the medical colleges in the country. The representation asked for the MCI to intervene and provide them with help, security, dignity as well as justice in the said matter.
Putting forward their demands, it representation demanded
The representation further appealed that while the members of the council owing to their senior positions may not be aware of the plight and experiences of the junior resident doctors across various medical colleges in the country, the council should come forward in providing solutions to these problems faced by the doctors
Considering the matter of the junior doctors, the Executive Committee of the Council decided to place the matter before the Academic Committee of the Council for consideration and submit its report within 03 months.
Numerous instances of harassment of junior doctors have been reported recently. Some of the junior doctors have even taken extreme steps unable to bear the pressures. Last week, a PG Pediatrics student who had alleged sexual harassment against her professors at SV Medical College committed suicide after no action was taken on her complaint. She was also upset after she failed in the post-graduate exams.

- An immediate stop to the humiliation, discrimination against the junior doctors.
- All junior doctors should be assigned proper and time-bound duties in order to improve patient care.
- Provide them with proper offs, as currently they are treated like kept like prisoners during their one year of junior residency
- Never to make them do house-works of the seniors
- Give them work as per proper duty hours so that they can get rest and have some personal life
