Lucknow: Bringing good news to the postgraduate medical aspirants in Uttar Pradesh, the State government is planning to add more than 800 postgraduate medical seats across the government medical institutions in the State from the 2024 session onwards.

This plan to increase PG medical seats will primarily concentrate on King George's Medical University (KGMU) and Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow, Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida, Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College in Kanpur and medical colleges in peripheral districts.

The State this year will focus on the key specialities such as obstetrics and gynaecology, otolaryngology, orthopaedic surgery, general surgery, sports medicine among surgical branches apart from radiology and pathology.

Apart from this, the state Medical Education department has also proposed several seats in autonomous state medical colleges (ASMCs) that were opened in the last 5 years. The reason why the State has proposed this is to increase speciality care for patients in medical colleges located in the peripheral districts.

Altogether 24 seats will be proposed for the Rajashri Dashrath ASMC in Ayodhya. This includes four seats in pathology, two in microbiology, four in anatomy, five in biochemistry.

In respect of Government medical college, Basti, a total number of 48 seats will be proposed. This includes five in radiodiagnosis and three in ophthalmology.

Announcing this decision to add new PG medical seats, the official page of UP government wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "After giving a push to healthcare facility, Uttar Pradesh now plans its biggest ever leap in higher medical education by adding over 800 PG medical seats across government medical institutions in the state from 2024 session onwards."

Commenting on this, the Principal Secretary of UP Medical Education department, Alok Kumar told HT, “Preparations have been completed for adding 763 seats and work is being done on more. This will be the biggest ever jump in PG medical seats in the state from our present over 1700 seats across government medical colleges.”

As per the latest media report by Hindustan Times, in order to make sure that the National Medical Commission (NMC) does not reject this proposal, the medical education department has prepared a list of seats that can be added to each of the 35 medical institutes across the State along with the shortcomings identified by principals/heads of the institutions.

Referring to this, the Principal Secretary further added, “We ensured those shortcomings are rectified first. Once the hurdles were cleared, the proposal was accepted from the colleges. We are sure we are going to add almost all the seats we propose to.”

“We are ensuring no proposal even for a single seat goes to the NMC without proper evaluation and fulfilling standard criteria,” he added.

Until the year 2015, there were altogether 933 PG medical seats in Uttar Pradesh. With the gradual increase of PG medical seats every year, currently the State has more than 1700 seats in different specialities. Apart from the 763 seats that have already been proposed by the State Government, work is in progress on adding another 150 medical seats.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar had informed the Parliament that for the academic year 2023-2024, there are altogether 3795 PG medical seats in Uttar Pradesh including 3522 MD/MS/Diploma seats and 273 DM/MCh seats.
