Altogether 860 MBBS, 12758 PG Medical Seats Remained Vacant in the Last Three Years: MoS Health

New Delhi: In the last three years, altogether 860 MBBS and 12758 PG Medical Seats remained vacant, the Union Minister of State for Health, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar informed the Lok Sabha on Friday.

Giving a year-wise break up of vacant medical seats, the MoS Health informed that during the academic year 2019-2020, the total number of vacant UG and PG medical seats were 273 and 4614 respectively.

In the next year, i.e. during the academic year 2021-2022, the number of vacant UG seats increased from 273 to 326 seats. However, the total number of vacant PG medical seats decreased from 4614 seats to 3744 medical seats.

Last year during the academic year 2022-2023, altogether 262 UG medical seats and 4400 PG medical seats went vacant, revealed the Health Ministry data.

Data Regarding Vacant UG & PG Medical Seats:

According to National Medical Commission (NMC), the number of MBBS & PG seats vacant from 2019-20 to 2022-23, year wise is as under:-

Dr. Pawar was responding to the questions raised by Parliament members who sought to know the details regarding the number of students appearing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) All India Pre-Medical Entrance Test during the last three years and the current year. Details were also sought regarding the number of UG and PG medical seats available during the last three years and the details of vacant seats during that period.

Responding to these questions, MoS Health informed the Lok Sabha that according to the information received from the National Testing Agency (NTA), in the year 2020, altogether 15,97,435 students registered for NEET UG examination and 13,66,945 students appeared for the test. In 2021, the number of students who registered for the examination was 16,14,777. Among these, 15,44,273 students appeared in the exam.

In the next year, i.e. in 2022, a total number of 18,72,343 students registered and 17,64,571 students appeared in the NEET UG exam. Finally, this year, 20,87,462 students registered and 20,38,596 students appeared in the UG medical entrance test examination.

Seats Availability: 

The Minister also informed the Parliament about the number of Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) seats available for the students in the last three years and the current academic year.

According to the data revealed by the Ministry, during the academic year 2020-2021, 83275 UG and 55495 PG medical seats were available. Altogether 91927 UG and 60202 PG medical seats were available during the academic year 2021-2022. Last year i.e. in 2022-2023, altogether 96077 UG and 64059 PG medical seats were available and this year, a total number of 107948 UG and 67802 PG medical seats are available for admission.
