Bhopal: The Union Ministry of Ayush, and the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), New Delhi, have granted recognition to 28 Ayurvedic medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh for the 2025-26 academic session.

Among the recognized institutions are seven government-run Ayurvedic colleges located in Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Rewa, Ujjain, Indore, and Burhanpur. In addition, 21 privately managed Ayurvedic medical colleges across the state have also received approval to operate for the upcoming academic year, reports Free Press Journal

According to official data, a total of 598 Ayurvedic colleges are functioning nationwide, with 34 of them situated in Madhya Pradesh alone. Pt. Khushilal Sharma Government Ayurvedic College in Bhopal has been granted approval to admit 75 undergraduate (BAMS) students and 74 postgraduate students across various specializations. Several other prominent colleges in Bhopal, including the School of Ayurvedic Science, Sardar Ajit Singh Smriti Ayurved College, Ramkrishna College of Ayurveda, and Mansarovar Ayurved Medical College, have each received approval for 100 undergraduate BAMS seats.

Dr Rakesh Pandey, National Spokesperson of Ayush Medical Association, told Free Press Journal, “Out of 34 Ayurved colleges in Madhya Pradesh, 28 have been granted recognition and while six are still pending. There are more than 40,000 seats in 598 Ayurvedic medical colleges across the country, including approximately 3,000 UG seats in Madhya Pradesh.”

This recognition marks a significant step toward strengthening the infrastructure and reach of Ayurvedic education in Madhya Pradesh. This is a crucial step while many Ayurveda clinics are not being maintained in the country. A high-tech Ayurvedic Hospital located near the District Panchayat in Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka built for Rs 7.5 crore, has failed to fulfil its purpose of offering healthcare to the local community, despite being completed over a year ago. The 50-bed facility remains unused and has shockingly instead turned into a parking lot for officials' cars.
