Coimbatore: Taking action against a fake medical college at Olapalayam offering medical courses without recognition, the Health officials in Tirupur have sealed the institute.

Based in Kangayam block in Tirupur district, Dr. Selvanayagi Medical Institute of Electropathy and Hospital was allegedly offering three illegal courses including Bachelor in Electropathy Medicine and Surgery, Doctor of Medicine in Electro Homeopathy and Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology.

While these courses are found to be illegal, around 90 students are enrolled to study at the medical college.

Taking note of the matter, the Collector of Tirupur, Dr. S Vineeth issued instruction and accordingly, a team led by joint director of medical and rural health services Dr. Kanagarani sealed the college on Monday.

Apart from this, recently, the block medical officer Dr. Rajalaksmi also warned the district health authorities about the college.

According to a health official, the matter will be investigated on Thursday and based on the probe, criminal actions will be taken against the guilty persons.

Commenting on the matter, Tirupur collector Dr. S Vineeth told the Times of India that the college has been sealed and the parents of the students have also been informed. Once all the students are vacated, the college hostel will also be sealed.

An official from the health department informed the daily that even though the Principal of the concerned college claimed that he was a doctor, he could not prove it. It has been revealed following an investigation that the principal too has completed an unrecognized medical course.

Despite not have a valid medical degree, the concerned principal was allegedly running a clinic at Vellakovil and practising allopathy medicine. The wife of the principal is the correspondent of the college.

The probe revealed that the principal and his wife used to give false assurance to the students promising that they will become doctors after completing the course.

Since the majority of the students of the college belong to the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, they are not aware about the fact that the courses are unrecognized. Already, one set of students have completed the courses and left the campus, informed a health official. The current students were very disappointed with the news of the college being sealed and some of the students broke into tears.

Allegedly, the principal and the correspondent of the college claimed having the right to offer courses without any affiliation from the Dr. MGR Medical University or any other competent authority. In order to prove their claim, they cited an order of the Supreme Court. However, the health officials proved them wrong by referring to a High Court order delivered back in 2020, where the court had ruled that no such courses can be offered within the State.
