BRIMS Bidar On-duty resident doctor assaulted by mob, suffers facial fracture, doctors protest

Bidar: In a shocking incident of alleged violence against medical professionals, a 28-year-old first-year PG orthopaedic resident doctor at Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS), Bidar, was reportedly brutally assaulted by a group of patient attendants and relatives while performing emergency duty in the casualty ward.

The police have so far arrested five accused directly involved in the case after registering an FIR against several individuals. Currently, efforts are underway to identify and nab more accused in the case. 

The doctor is currently admitted to the ICU and is undergoing treatment for a maxillary fracture after the doctors diagnosed a fracture in the left side of the nasal bone. 

According to the doctor's complaint, he was on emergency casualty duty at around 1:00 AM on May 22, 2026, when the incident happened. At the time, he was attending to and treating an injured patient who had reportedly suffered injuries after falling from a motorcycle.

Suddenly, a group of youths claiming to be the patient’s relatives allegedly barged into the casualty ward and wanted the doctor to treat him without registering his name.  When the doctor insisted on recording his name in the Outpatient Department (OPD) register to treat them as a Medico-Legal Case (MLC), the youth, who were about a dozen in number, assaulted him, PTI has reported. 

They reportedly abused the doctor, threatened him with dire consequences, obstructed his official duty, and physically assaulted him. The doctor described it as an attempt to murder him by stampeding, punching him in the face, head and abdomen.

In his complaint, the doctor alleged that the accused pushed him to the ground, assaulted him with hands and kicks, issued death threats, and attempted to interfere with emergency patient care services inside the casualty ward.

While the hospital staff came to the doctor's rescue and tried to persuade the gang, they kept attacking him.

Following the incident, the angry doctors and medical staff staged a protest condemning the attack and demanding stronger security measures for healthcare workers and seeking the arrest of the accused.

Writing to the Directorate of Medical Education, Bengaluru, the Junior Doctors' Association (JDA) of BRIMS Bidar requested immediate action from the authorities. 

The association demanded strict legal action against all accused persons under relevant provisions of law, adequate security arrangements in casualty and emergency wards at BRIMS Bidar, strict implementation of the Karnataka Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act and steps to ensure safety and protection of resident doctors and healthcare workers across government medical colleges.

"Such violent acts against healthcare professionals while performing government duty are highly condemnable and create fear and insecurity among resident doctors and healthcare workers. This unfortunate incident has severely affected the morale and safety of junior doctors working in emergency services. Repeated attacks on healthcare workers not only endanger doctors but also compromise patient care and hospital functioning," JDA said in the letter. 

In a post on X, United Doctors' Front (UDF) said, "Violence against doctors cannot be tolerated anymore. We demand immediate strict action against all those involved and concrete steps for the safety of medical professionals."

Dr Dhruv Chauhan, National Spokesperson of the Indian Medical Association Junior Doctors' Network (IMA-JDN) wrote in a post on 'X', "23 lakh NEET UG aspirants should watch and know the brutality that happens to a DOCTOR after life long of their struggle." 

He further asked the Karnataka Chief Minister, "Where is the security for doctors?"
