New Delhi: The Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya has recently informed the Lok Sabha that there are a total number of 396 MB seats in Radiation Oncology in 87 Medical Colleges.

He has further clarified that even though DM courses are available in Nephrology, Neurology and Cardiology, MD courses are not available for the same.

This information came from the Union Health Minister while he was responding to a number of questions raised in the Lok Sabha related to the State/UT wise details regarding the total number of seats for M.D in Nephrology, Neurology, Cardiology and Oncology available in various Medical Colleges in the Country.

The questions further include the steps taken or proposed to be taken by the Government to enhance the seats in the above categories to meet the requirements.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Health Ministry had recently given the breakup of Oncology seats available in the country. As per the data provided by the Union Health Ministry, there are a total number of 958 seats in the country offering PG medical training at Broad Specialty and Super Specialty level with different Oncology related specialisations.

Responding to the recent questions, the Union Health Minister, in a written statement, informed the House that "As informed by National Medical Commission, MD Courses are not available in Nephrology, Neurology and Cardiology. However, DM Courses are available in these specialities. There are 396 seats of MD in Radiation Oncology in 87 Medical colleges."

The Health Minister further included the State/UT wise details of MD seats in Radiation Oncology.

As per the data provided by the Health Minister, regarding the MD in Radiation Oncology specialty, Andhra Pradesh has 10 seats including 3 seats in each of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) , Tirupati and NRI Medical College, Guntur, and 2 each in Guntur Medical College, and GSL Medical College, Rajahmundry.

There are 6 seats in Assam in two institutes- 1 in Assam Medical College and 5 in Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute. Bihar has 4 MD in Radiotherapy Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences. Among the 8 seats in Chandigarh each of PGIMER and Government Medical College, Chandigarh have 4 seats.

Besides, there are 6 seats in Pt. J N M Medical College in Raipur, Chattisgarh and 23 seats in Delhi including 5 at Maulana Azad Medical College, 12 at All India Institute of Medical Sciences and 6 at Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital.

The data further reveals that Gujarat has 10 MD seats in Radiation Oncology including 9 at B J Medical College and 1 at MP Shah Medical College, Jamnagar. Besides, there are 8 MD seats in Haryana including 6 at Pt. B D Sharma Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, and 2 seats at Maharishi Markandeshwar Institute Of Medical Sciences & Research.

Himachal Pradesh has 4 seats in Radiation Oncology in Indira Gandhi Medical College, and J & K has 5 seats in Sher-I Kashmir Instt. of Medical Sciences.

Among the States, the number of MD seats in Radiation Oncology is highest in Karnataka. Among the 38 seats in the State, 3 seats are in Kasturba Medical College, 9 in Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, 5 seats in M S Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore, 3 in Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, 2 in St. Johns Medical College, 2 in Kasturba Medical College Mangalore, 3 in Father Mullers Medical College, 8 in Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre.

Among the 29 seats in Kerala, 6 are in Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, 3 in T D Medical College, Alleppey (Allappuzha), 1 seats in Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, Thrissur, 8 seats in Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvanthapuram, 4 seats in Government Medical College, Kozhikode, Calicut, 3 seats in Amrita School of Medicine, Kochi, 2 seats in Government Medical College, Thrissur, and 2 more in Government Medical College, Kottayam.

Madhya Pradesh has a total number of 23 MD seats in Radiation Oncology. Among these, there are 4 seats in M G M Medical College, Indore, 4 in Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, 3 in All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhopal, 5 in Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, Jabalpur, 2 in Chirayu Medical College and Hospital, and 5 in Sri Aurobindo Medical College and Post Graduate Institute, Indore.

There are a total number of 28 MD Radiation Oncology seats in Maharashtra and among them majority, i.e. 18 seats belong to Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai. Other than this, there are 5 seats in Rural Medical College, Loni, 2 seats in Government Medical College, Aurangabad, 1 seat in Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences and 2 seats in Government Medical College, Nagpur.

Apart from these, there are 4 seats in Manipur-based Regional Institute of Medical Science, 6 seats in Orissa's SCB Medical College, 9 seats in Pondicherry including 7 in Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, and 2 seats in Sri Venkateswaraa Medical College.

Punjab has 8 MD Radiation Oncology seats in two institutes- Christian Medical College (3) and Guru Govind Singh Medical College (5). Among the 24 seats in Rajasthan, there is 1 seat in Dr SN Medical College, 4 in AIIMS Jodhpur, 9 in Sardar Patel Medical College, Bikaner, 6 seats in SMS Medical College, Jaipur, 2 seats in Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, 1 seat in Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital, 1 seat in R N T Medical College, Udaipur.

Tamil Nadu has a total 31 MD Radiation Oncology seats including 4 seats in Madras Medical College, 8 seats in Christian Medical College, 7 seats in Regional Centre for Cancer Research and Treatment, 2 seats in Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research, 3 seats in Tirunelveli Medical College, 3 seats in Kilpauk Medical College, and 4 seats in Chengalpattu Medical College. Among the 19 MD Radiation Oncology seats in Telangana, Osmania Medical College has 14 seats, Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences has 3 seats, and Kamineni Academy of Medical Sciences & Research has 2 seats.

Uttarakhand has a total number of 23 seats in two institutes- AIIMS Rishikesh (20) and Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (3).

In Uttar Pradesh, 35 MD Radiation Oncology seats include 5 seats in Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, 6 seats in King George Medical University, 3 seats in S N Medical College, 4 seats in Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, 4 seats in GSVM Medical College, 5 seats in Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, 4 seats in Shri Ram MurtiSmarak Institute of Medical Sciences and 4 seats in Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College.

West Bengal too has 35 MD Radiation Oncology seats in 5 institutes. There are 8 seats available in Government Medical College, Kolkata, 6 seats in Nilratan Sircar Medical College, 10 seats in Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, 5 seats in Burdwan Medical College, and 6 seats in RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata.

The Union Health Minister further referred to the measures taken by the Government to increase the availability of medical seats/doctors in India. The steps taken by the Government include-

i. Centrally Sponsored Scheme for strengthening/ upgradation of existing State Government/Central Government Medical Colleges to increase MBBS and PG seats.

ii. Central Sector Scheme for upgradation of Government Medical Colleges by construction of Super Specialty Blocks. A total of 75 projects have been approved and 53 have been completed.

iii. Under Central Sector Scheme for setting up of new AIIMS, 22 AIIMS have been approved. Undergraduate courses have started in 18 AIIMS.

iv. DNB qualification has been recognized for appointment as faculty to take care of shortage of faculty.

v. DNB diploma courses have been approved in 8 broad specialities.

vi. The ratio of teachers to students has been rationalized to increase the number of postgraduate medical seats in the country.

vii. By amending the regulations, it has been made mandatory for all medical colleges to start PG courses within 3 years from the date of their MBBS recognition /continuation of recognition.
