GMCs in every district, MBBS seats to go up to 5,240 in Telangana

Hyderabad: With eight more Government medical college coming up in the State, the total number of Government medical seats in Telangana is go up to 5,240 after establishing a medical college in every district, opined the State in a recent release on Tuesday.

Referring to the fact that the number of MBBS seats in the state has been increased from 700 in 2014 to 1,649 in 2021, the State also discussed about the growing belief of people in the public healthcare system of the State.

Claiming that around 30,000 people in Telangana receive government medical care every day, the State Government referred to the "Kanti Velugu" (free eye check-up) programme, under which 1.52 crore people were screened and 41 lakh visually impaired people have been provided customised spectacles and medicines free of cost.

"The state government's medical care is saving thousands of rupees for poor middle class families. The government is giving utmost priority to the expansion of medical education with the determination of the people of the state to meet their medical needs. As part of this, the government established the Kaloji Narayana Rao Health University in Warangal," the government release was quoted saying by PTI.

Earlier this year, the Minister of State in the Union Health Ministry, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar had informed the Parliament about the State-wise details regarding the total number of medical seats in the country. As per the data revealed by the MoS Health, there are a total number of 34 medical colleges in the country with an intake capacity of 5340 MBBS seats. Among these, 11 colleges are run by the Government and there are a total number of 1790 MBBS seats. Besides, in the 23 private management-run medical institutes, the intake capacity for MBBS course is in 3550 seats.

Eight More Medical Colleges in Telangana:

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that Minister T Harish Rao recently announced that eight Telangana based medical colleges would begin their admission process by the academic year 2022-2023. Those eight medical colleges are in Sangareddy, Mahabubabad, Mancherial, Wanaparthy, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Jagtial, Nagarkurnool and Ramagundam.

With the addition of eight more government medical colleges in the State, the public healthcare system in Telangana is expected to get a major boost as this will enable more people availing treatment free of cost.

However, recently NMC said no for the medical college in Kothagudem as the Apex medical body had found several gross deficiencies in the infrastructure of medical college. Although the principal of the medical college claimed that they have addressed all the flaws, the permission for commencing MBBS admission in the medical college has not been given by NMC yet.

While NMC said no for Kothagudem medical college, it has recently given its nod for the Government Medical College in Jagtial and initially the medical college will provide MBBS admission in 150 medical seats.

PTI adds that, the State Government in the recent release has mentioned that throughout the state, 21 government hospitals are offering CT scan services and Cath Labs were set up in Hyderabad as well as Khammam, Warangal and Adilabad to perform heart surgeries.

The release further claimed that the regime of the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has increased the per-bed expenditure from Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,500 to improve sanitation management in government hospitals while dietary charges for general patients have been increased from Rs 40 to Rs 80 per day.

The number of MBBS seats in the state has been raised to 1,649 in 2021 from 700 in 2014 and the number is expected to go up to 5,240 after establishing a medical college in every district.

Similarly, the number of postgraduate medical seats has increased from 531 in 2014 to 967 by 2021. The number of super specialty seats rose from 82 in 2014 to 153 by 2021. The number of PG and super specialty seats will go up to 2,500 and 1,000 respectively in future.

The release further pointed out that about 18 important government hospitals in the city provide three meals at just Rs five to the attendants of the patients benefitting 18,600 people. In the State budget, Telangana has allotted Rs 3,091 crore, added PTI.

While the public healthcare system is eperiencing a rapid growth in the State, it should also be mentioned in this context that following a surprise inspection, the National Medical Commission (NMC) recently cancelled MBBS and PG medical admissions in three private medical colleges in the State resulting in a huge decrease in the total number of seats.

While MBBS and postgraduate courses have been cancelled at MNR Medical College and Hospital, Sangareddy, in the case of Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences, Vikarabad, the Apex Medical Regulator has cancelled the PG medical seats. Apart from this, TRR Institute of Medical Sciences, Patancheru lost its letter of permission for the first renewal and second batch of admission.
