KGMU to expel 37 students unable to clear MBBS for 20 years after one last chance

Lucknow: Giving an ultimatum to 37 MBBS students, who could not clear their MBBS degree examination for the last twenty years, King George's Medical University (KGMU) has decided to expel them in case they cannot pass the exam after one last chance.

Although the University had been providing these students with several opportunities and concessions, they failed to complete their studies despite being admitted to the course around two decades ago.

In fact, considering the requests made by these students, the University had set up a committee for running special classes for them. Counselling had also been arranged for these students. However, despite all these efforts, they could not clear the exam. 

Meanwhile, many of their classmates have now become leading medical practitioners, professors. In fact, these students have already been married and have children who go to school.

As per the latest media report by Deccan Chronicle, now the University has decided to give an ultimatum to these students as it has clarified that these students would be expelled if they fail to clear the exam after one last chance.

The Vice-chancellor of the University Dr Vipin Puri has confirmed that there are around 37 such students who failed to clear the examination despite several attempts.

Speaking about this, an official of the University told the daily, "Many of these students were married and had school-going children. We did everything legally possible for them to help them pass their exams but our efforts did not yield any positive results."

Although these students have failed to clear their exams for years, the National Medical Commission's (NCM) 2019 rules clearly mention that the students who would fail to clear their exams in nine years or in four attempts should be expelled from the course.

Referring to these rules. VC Dr. Puri confirmed that the University would give these students one last students before expelling them. He mentioned, "We will give them one last chance to clear the exams. Those who fail, will be shown the door."

Last year the University had given such an ultimatum to 20 such students. Medical Dialogues had reported that opining that MBBS students who will fail to clear exams even after spending more than 10 years in the University should consider changing the course of life, KGMU had decided to expel such students if they fail in two more mercy attempts.

The executive council of the University had taken such a decision on Friday regarding the MBBS students who haven't been able to pass at their MBBS examinations for the last 8-27 years. At present, there are 20 such students in the University.

Previously, there was no rule at the maximum number of attempts for clearing the examination at KGMU. Later, after consulting the National Medical Commission (NMC), the University had set the timeline for clearing the MBBS examination at 10 years. It was decided that after 10 years, only 4 mercy attempts would be given.
