Dehradun: Giving the medical students in Uttarakhand a reason to celebrate, the State Cabinet has revised the MBBS Fee structure by bringing it down from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 1.45 lakh per year.

Now, the MBBS students pursuing their medical education in the Government medical colleges of the State, will have to pay Rs 50,000 per year if they are willing to sign a bond of serving the State for a period of five years after completing their studies.

However, those who would not execute a bond will have to pay Rs 1.45 lakh every year instead of the previous fee of Rs 4 lakh.

Such a decision has been taken by the Government at the Cabinet meeting on Thursday. In the meeting chaired by the Chief Minister of the State Pushkar Singh Dhami, the proposal recommending a cut in the MBBS fees was approved.

After this revision, Uttarakhand has become the State with lowest MBBS medical fees in Government medical colleges, Government spokesperson Subodh Uniyal has claimed, adds TOI.

The MBBS students have been protesting for quite some time and have been demanding a revision in the fee structure. The Medical Dialogues Team previously reported that with the bond service helping them with the fee, the students used to pay 50000 annual fees; however, when the government decided to take away the bond service norm, the MBBS students became compelled to pay 4.26 lacs per annum.

Last year, raising their voice regarding the issue, many of the students studying in the Government medical colleges in Uttarakhand started raising their voices through the social media platforms and pointed out their concerns regarding the payments of the annual fee which reached nearly Rs 4.5 lakh.

This year also, several students belonging to the Government medical colleges in Uttarakhand were protesting against the "exorbitant tuition fee". In fact, taking disciplinary against the protesting students the authorities of the Government Doon Medical College had reportedly expelled five of its students.

Finally, the long demand of the MBBS students has been funfilled as the State Government has decided to lower the fees from Rs 4.5 lakhs to Rs 1.45 lakh.

As per the latest media report by Hindustan Times, at the State Cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister on Thursday, the proposal of reducing the MBBS fees in the State was approved and consequently, the fees have been fixed at Rs 50,000 per year for bonded students and Rs 1.45 lakh for non-bonded students.

"With this, Uttarakhand has become the state charging the lowest fee from medical students in government colleges. We have taken a major step and it will go a long way in improving health services," agriculture minister and government spokesperson Subodh Uniyal told TOI.
