520 More MBBS Seats available for local candidates Following Telangana HC Verdict

Hyderabad: Following the Telangana High Court's decision of upholding the State Government's decision of reserving 100 per cent of the competitive authority quota seats in the medical colleges established after June 02, 2014, altogether 520 additional MBBS seats have now been available to only the medical aspirants from the State.

Hailing the landmark judgment of the High Court, Finance and Health Minister T Harish Rao extended his best wishes to all the aspiring medical students from Telangana.

Taking to Twitter, Minister Rao mentioned, "It is a good result that the High Court upheld the government's decision to reserve 100 percent of the competitive authority quota seats for Telangana students in the medical colleges established after June 2, 2014. Best wishes to students of Telangana."

"It is clear that the government's decision to set up a district government medical college and make the MBBS seats available to the children of Telangana is the right one," the Minister further mentioned.

Referring to the fact that due to the HC judgment, another 520 medical seats will be available to the Telangana Students, he further added in the Tweet, "It is already known that additional 1300 MBBS seats have been made available to Telangana students by reserving 85% of the MBBSB category seats locally as per the instructions of CM KCR. With the latest verdict of the High Court, 520 more medical seats are available for Telangana students. Due to these two decisions taken by the Telangana government with foresight, 1820 seats will be available every year. This is equivalent to setting up about 20 new medical colleges."

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that in an attempt to ensure that more medical aspirants in Telangana get a chance in the medical colleges in the State, the Government of Telangana has now reserved 85 per cent of Category-B management quota MBBS and BDS seats in minority and non-minority private medical colleges for local students.

Earlier this year, Telangana Government stopped the 15% unreserved quota for admissions in 36 medical colleges in the State, which were established after the formation of the new State of Telangana. Previously, these seats were open for admission of students from the neighbouring State of Andhra Pradesh as well. However, recently the State issued orders and made 100% of seats available only for the State domicile students.

Although, this rule was challenged by the medical aspirants and their parents from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana HC on Monday dismissed the pleas after taking note of the fact that 85% of competent authority quota seats alone had been reserved for local candidates for the State of Telangana in respect of institutions set up after the formation of the State i.e., 02.06.2014.

The bench further considered the fact that it is permissible for the students of other States including the State of Andhra Pradesh to participate in 15% of competent authority quota seats. Due to the HC order, another 520 MBBS seats have now been made available to the medical aspirants in Telangana.
