Karnataka: Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) has invited online applications for PhD courses in Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing Health Sciences and Physiotherapy 2023-2024.

The candidates will have to do online registration. They must ensure that the printout of their application with all enclosures mentioned in the brochure reaches the RGUHS on or before 21.4.2023, 5.00 pm, by post or in person. Printout of application filled online, along with attested copies of all required certificates, shall be sent by post or In-person for registration to “The Registrar, RGUHS, 4th ‘T’ Block, Jayanagar, Bangalore – 560 041.” Candidates should super scribe on the cover as “Application for PhD Entrance Exam-2023.”

Enclosures: (Attested copies) –

1. SSLC Marks card.

2. UG and PG Degree Certificates with Marks cards.

3. Registration Certificate from the State Council in applicable cases.

4. NOC from the Head of the Institution where the candidate is employed.

5. Fee paid details: Transaction-Id with the date.

6. Any other relevant documents.

The candidates will have to pay Rs 3000 as an exam fee, which can be paid until 12.4.2023 (before 5:00 pm) online. On 29.4.2023, the hall ticket will be issued for eligible candidates. The entrance exam will be held on 4.5.2023 only in Bangalore. The provisional results will be announced in 2nd week of June 2023. In 3rd week of August 2023, the Presentation of the Synopsis before the Committee will be carried out. The session will commence in September 2023.

PhD Entrance Exam -2023 is being conducted to determine the eligibility for admission of students to Medical / Dental / Pharmacy /AYUSH Nursing /Allied Health Sciences and Physiotherapy faculties for 2023-2024.

The courses included are –

1. Medical

2. Dental

3. Physiotherapy

4. Pharmacy

5. Indian System of Medicine (AYUSH) – Ayurveda, Naturopathy & yogic sciences, and Unani

6. Nursing

7. Allied Health Sciences - Radiation Physics, Clinical Psychology, Neuro Sciences Technology, Clinical Research, Medical Imaging Technology, Public Health, Renal Dialysis Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Perfusion Technology, Hospital Administration, Prosthetics and Orthotics, Echocardiography, Optometry, Anesthesia Technology, Operation Theater Technology, and Respiratory Care Technology

Eligibility –

The candidates who fulfil the following criteria will be eligible to appear for the Entrance Exam -

1. They should be citizens of India

2. They have studied and passed the courses leading to the award of PG degree/ diploma in respective branches recognized by respective councils/Government of India and affiliated to any University established by Law

3. A postgraduate qualification in the concerned specialization and faculty is necessary.

4. Those who completed their postgraduate degrees in their respective branch are eligible for that branch/subject only

The course-wise eligibility criteria are enclosed in the notice below.

Selected candidates in the entrance examination will be considered for Provisional Registration subject to the availability of RGUHS Recognized PhD guide and RGUHS Recognized PhD institution only.

Duration of the PhD Program –

1. The period of training for a PhD, as per NMC, shall be two years for candidates who possess MD/MS/PG Diploma, DM/MCh MSc and three years for candidates possessing MSc in medical subjects under Medical Faculty (3 years course from a Medical College).

2. The PhD program in all other subjects except those under Medical will be for a minimum duration of three years for a full-time course and five years for a part-time course. The maximum duration will be 7 years, including coursework from the date of their provisional registration for all other faculty.

3. Extension beyond the above limits may be considered by the PhD Registration committee of the respective faculty on case to case basis; only in exceptional cases the maximum duration can be extended for one more year based on the representation submitted by the student and the guide. This provision can be applied only with the approval of the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor.

4. Where the candidate, PhD guide and the research department are in the same institution, the course duration for the full-time courses is three years, and for part-time courses, it is four years for all faculty except Medical.

5. Where the guide and Research department are from one institution, and the candidate is from another institution affiliated with RGUHS, the Minimum Course Duration for Part time PhD will be for five years. The registration of candidates for PhD will not be considered if the candidate, guide and research department are in three different places.

6. Where the candidate, PhD guide and the research department are in the same institution, the course duration for the full-time course is three years, and for the part-time course, it is four years for all faculty.

7. Part Time facility provided for pursuing PhD Program can be availed only by teaching faculty working in colleges affiliated with RGUHS and eligible candidates working in departments of different Institutions/Industries/ Hospitals recognized by RGUHS as PhD research centres.

8. Foreign nationals are eligible for only full-time PhD courses provided that their Undergraduate and Postgraduate should be completed under RGUHS affiliated institution/any other Recognized University in India. Faculty from outside the State/University who wish to apply for PhD courses can apply only for full-time PhD courses.

Exam details -

1. All the candidates intending to register for PhD program will appear for the Entrance Exam conducted by the University.

2. The Entrance Exam will be conducted at the Centre(s) notified by the University.

3. An Entrance Test shall be a qualifying test with qualifying marks at the 50th Percentile. Percentile method be adopted for declaration of the result.

4. The test consists of two papers, conducted over two sessions of three hours. The syllabus of the first theory paper consists of the Basics of research methodology and will carry 50 marks. (10X5) The Second theory paper, which will be subject-specific, preferably with the competence of PG standard, will carry 50 marks. (10X5).

5. There will be eight questions, each with ten marks. The candidate shall answer any five questions out of eight questions in both papers.

6. The marks scored by the candidate for both papers will be considered for deciding the pass criteria.

7. Percentile method is adopted for the declaration of the result. Faculty, wise 50th percentile shall be cut off point to declare for having passed the PhD entrance examination.

8. If multiple candidates score equal marks in the entrance examination, the ranking will be based on marks scored in the post-graduation examination.

9. If the Postgraduation marks are also the same, then Undergraduate marks will be considered. If the Undergraduate marks are also the same, then the candidate who is senior in age will be considered for a higher ranking.

The provisional list of affiliated institutions importing PhD courses along with courses in which PhD is offered and the list of PhD Recognized guides available in the Institutions is on the website for the candidate’s reference.

The candidates who successfully clear the Entrance Exam will be invited to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before a duly constituted University PhD Registration committee of the respective faculty.

The interview/viva voce will also consider the following aspects, viz. whether –

1. To evaluate the research aptitude of the applicants.

2. The candidate possesses the competence for the proposed research.

3. The research work can be suitably undertaken at the Institution/College.

4. The proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge.

The candidates note that the eligibility secured at the entrance Exam is valid for admission as per the calendar of events, and such marks are valid for two terms (for that academic year and the next academic year).

The colleges under the University which are allowed to conduct PhD programs shall decide on an annual basis through their academic bodies a predetermined and manageable number of PhD scholars be admitted, depending on the number of available Research Guides (Maximum 10 per Department), depending on the number of available Research Guides (Maximum 6 per Guide) and other academic and physical facilities available. They shall follow the norms regarding the scholar-teacher ratio, laboratory, library and other facilities prescribed by the University.

Instructions to candidates -

1. The candidates will be present at the centre 30 minutes before the commencement of the Exam by 9.30 am

2. No candidate is allowed after 10:00 am.

3. Only the Hall Ticket candidates will be allowed to appear for the Entrance Exam. In case of loss of a Hall Ticket, the candidates should contact the Chief Superintendent of the centre one hour earlier for assistance.

4. No candidate will copy from the paper of any other candidate or permit their papers to be copied or attempt to give or seek any illegal assistance.

5. No candidate will be allowed to the examination hall after the commencement of the Entrance Exam.

6. No candidate will be allowed to leave the examination hall before the end of the first thirty minutes. Candidates leaving the hall before the end of the Entrance Exam will have to hand over the question paper to the room invigilator and collect the same at the end of the Exam.

7. Candidate should sign the attendance sheet per the invigilator's instructions.

8. Silence must be observed in the examination hall. Any candidate found guilty of disorderly or improper conduct will be liable for expulsion from the examination hall and debarred from the Entrance Exam by the Chief Superintendent of the centre.

9. Candidates are not permitted to carry electronic gadgets into the examination hall, like Pager, Cell Phones, Bluetooth, etc.
