New Delhi: A nursing teacher at Government Nursing College, Jalaun, affiliated with Government Medical College, Jalaun, Orai, Uttar Pradesh, has been accused of sexual harassment by two female students. After a comprehensive inquiry into the allegations, the teacher was recommended for termination from his position, and a police complaint was filed against him.

The issue came to light following an anonymous complaint received by the Society Against Violence in Education (SAVE) on January 3, 2025. The complaint, lodged by the affected female students, detailed ongoing incidents of sexual, financial, and casteist harassment at the institute. The harassment had allegedly been happening over a long period of time

As per the recent media reports byCareers360, the official press release read, “Sexual and Other Harassments of Girl Students at Government Nursing College, Jalaun, Orai, Uttar Pradesh, and recommendation of the Principal, Govt. Medical College, Jalaun to Director, Medical Education, Uttar Pradesh to Terminate the services of the Nursing Tutor Bhanu Sharma for alleged sexual harassment as confirmed by 2 girl students, and related Police Complaint.”

In response to the allegation, the accused has been recommended to the Director of Medical Education, Uttar Pradesh, for termination of service for inappropriately touching at least two female students, who testified before the inquiry committee.

The principal has also taken the necessary step of lodging a formal police complaint against the accused tutor. In addition, the tutor has been instructed to vacate his government-provided residential accommodation within two days of the order.

In an effort to address the broader institutional environment, the Principal has also called for disciplinary action against both the Principal and Vice-Principal of the Government Nursing College. They were accused of promoting a culture of ragging and creating an environment that lacked discipline and transparency within the college.

Speaking to News by Carrer 360, Gaurav Singhal, vice-president of SAVE said, “This complaint is a testament to the increasing number of ragging and sexual harassment complaints being received from the Medical Colleges all across India. 295 of the 1086 complaints received in 2024 by the National Anti-Ragging Helpline were from Medical Colleges (27%), whereas number of medical students in India is not more than 2% of the total students in hostels. The Union Health Minister should take cognizance of all this. Another fact is the 17 Suicides reported by the Helpline, which is equal to the suicides at Kota in 2024, but nobody talks of these suicides.”
