Ahmedabad: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants, three new private medical colleges are going to come up in Gujarat as the State Government has issued no-objection certificates for the proposals in this regard.

These new private medical colleges will be set up in Rajkot, Junagadh, and Kadi. While the colleges in Rajkot and Junagadh will have an intake capacity of 150 MBBS seats, the proposed college in Kadi will have 100 seats.

Sources informed TOI that the last date to apply for approval from the Apex medical regulator National Medical Commission (NMC) was December 31, 2023. Soon after the State Government issued the NOC for these colleges, the administration applied for the nod from the Apex Medical Commission.

The Times of India adds that these three new medical colleges may get approval from NMC before the next academic year. Therefore, with these new medical institutes, Gujarat will have 400 more MBBS seats from the next academic year onwards.

The Daily adds that previously the State had announced that 10 new medical colleges would come up in Kheda, Anand, Khambhaliya, Chhota Udepur, Mahisagar, Dang, Aravalli, Veraval and Botad.

However, none of these colleges applied for the approval from NMC. Therefore, it is unlikely for these 10 colleges to start operating anytime soon. As per the sources, the State had decided to introduce these colleges in phases so few of them could apply for the NMC nod in the next few years.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that last year, three new private medical colleges with 150 MBBS seats each got the approval from the Union Government to begin the academic sessions from 2023-2024.

The three new medical colleges included Ananya College of Medicine and Research at Kalol in Gandhinagar, SAL Institute of Medical Sciences at Sola Road in Ahmedabad, and Swaminarayan Institute of Medical Sciences and Research at Kalol in Gandhinagar.

As per the recent data provided by the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Gujarat has altogether 40 medical colleges with an intake capacity for 7150 MBBS and 2010 PG medical seats. Among these 23 Government medical colleges have 4250 MBBS seats. Further, the State also has 17 private medical colleges with an intake capacity of 2900 MBBS seats.
