358 Govt, 296 Private Medical Colleges in India, 157 Sanctioned Under Centrally Sponsored Scheme: MoS Health Informs Parliament
New Delhi: There are 358 Government and 296 Private Medical Colleges in the country as of now, MoS Health Dr Bharati Pawar recently informed the Rajya Sabha.
The minister was asked to provide details on the number of Government and private Medical colleges in the country at present, the amount spent by Government for modernizing the said Medical colleges in each of the last three years; and the amount likely to be spent for the year 2023-2024.
To this, the Minister replied, "As informed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) there are 358 Government and 296 Private Medical Colleges in the country as of now."
The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for ‘Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals’ with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no existing Government or private medical college.
