Lucknow: Following the plan of setting up medical colleges in each district of the state, the Uttar Pradesh government has appointed principals in 12 under-construction medical colleges that will become functional from the 2023-24 academic session.
The confirmation regarding this came from the Principal Secretary of Medical Education, Alok Kumar, who announced the names of the principals appointed to the designated colleges.
Medical colleges in Amethi, Auraiya, Kanpur Dehat, Kushinagar, Gonda, Pilibhit, Bulandshahr, Bijnor, Lakhimpur Kheri, Lalitpur, Sultanpur and Sonbhadra are being constructed and are expected to begin this academic year.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about the announcement of 16 medical colleges in the state by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The initiative had been taken to have at least one medical college in each district so that patients do not have to wander from one district to another for treatment. The upcoming medical colleges will highly benefit the people in need of medical care particularly those living in rural areas.
Earlier, the UP government also planned to open medical colleges in PPP mode (Public-Private Partnership) in 16 districts and released an Expression of Interest (EOI) ( Instructions to Applicants) for the same. The authority came up with a scheme "the Scheme for Government Support to Private Investment in development of Medical College in Unserved Districts" inviting expressions of interest (EOI) for the pursuance of investment. At present, 10 medical colleges are already running under the PPP mode.
Explaining the benefit of these new colleges, Dr Abhishek Shukla, secretary general association of international doctors, told HT, “New medical colleges coming up in state will be instrumental in providing specialised care to people in these districts (where colleges are coming up). The need for specialised care makes patients travel from their home district to other districts in search of higher medical centres, and this can be avoided with the start of medical colleges.”
