4 MBBS students of Moti Lal Nehru Medical College expelled for 6 months, fined Rs 10k each for ragging juniors
Prayagraj: Taking strict action against medicos who allegedly ragged second-year students, 4 fourth-year MBBS students of Moti Lal Nehru Medical College (MLNMC) have been expelled from the hostel for six months and a fine of Rs 10,000 has been imposed on each of them.
All these senior students of the MBBS course were found to be indulging in ragging second-year students during the committee enquiry into the incident. Based on an anti-ragging committee report, all four students have been expelled from the hostel and directed to deposit the fine within a month.
According to the medical college officials, the second-year medical students filed a complaint stating that they were being subjected to ragging by their seniors. They claimed that the seniors had verbally abused and physically assaulted them.

As per HT news report, the senior students of the 63rd batch of MBBS of the college allegedly ragged the second-year medical students on May 27 at night. However, it came to light that this was the second complaint against the seniors received by the administration.
Earlier, the four accused students were also accused of ragging their juniors a few months back but the authorities left them with a warning. But the ragging allegedly continued and the authorities after receiving this second complaint decided to take action against the accused seniors.
Taking the matter seriously, the medical college authorities formed an anti-ragging committee and a meeting was held on May 30 to investigate the matter. The panel consisted of Prof Dilip Chaurasia, Dr Mohit Jain, and Dr Sachin Jain.
After reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing students from different batches, the panel members confirmed that the complaint against the four accused students was true and hence, took action accordingly.
Speaking to the HT, Prof Dilip Chaurasia, head of MLNMC’s anti-ragging team said, “They were accused of having hurled abuses and assaulted their juniors. The inquiry found the four guilty and the decision to expel them from the hostel was taken on May 30. All students have been warned if any such incident of ragging comes to fore, stricter action will follow."
Few days ago, Medical Dialogues team had reported that a representative of the University Grants Commission (UGC) informed in the NMC National Task Force's meeting on mental health and well-being of the medical students that 30 percent of the ragging incidents in India are reported from medical colleges.
Speaking about the issue of ragging, UGC Representative Alka Tomar termed UGC as the monitoring agency for anti-ragging issues in the country. She referred to the UGC regulations which were framed in 2009 to curb the menace of ragging. Describing this process, she referred to three aspects, receiving complaints, asking students to submit affidavits with an undertaking not to take part in ragging activities, and compliance with the rules.
