Bhubaneswar: A first year MBBS student has levelled allegations of ragging against his seniors at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur in Odisha's Ganjam district.

The matter came to light after the father of the MBBS student complained before the anti-ragging cell accusing two of his son’s seniors of beating him up inside the campus late Friday evening, reports PTI.

An internal committee has started an inquiry into the allegation. It will submit its report to the anti-ragging cell for further course of action, Principal of the medical college Santosh Kumar Mishra said on Monday.

The victim also lodged a police complaint against the two, Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M said. The police are also separately investigating the matter after registering a case under various sections of the IPC.

According to the complaint, the incident took place when the victim was returning to the hostel after a band practice on a motorcycle. Two of his seniors requested him to drop them near Gents Hostel 1. The two allegedly assaulted the medico without any reason after they got down from the two-wheeler.

“On Sunday, a first year MBBS student of MKCG Medical College -- **** from Balasore district who stays in Hostel-2 on the campus -- approached the Baidyanathpur police station alleging that on February 9 at around 11 p.m. when he was returning to his room, two fourth-year students assaulted him without any reason,” Saravana Vivek M, Superintendent of Police, Berhampur informed IANS.

The medico claimed that he suffered injuries in his neck because of the attack. The SP said that the medical examination of the victim had been conducted. The statements of the victim and others were also recorded. Whether the student was a victim of ragging or not will be known only through inquiry, he added.

The accused students have been served notice, directing them to appear at the police station for further inquiry. Police sources also said that legal action would be taken against the accused persons based on the findings of the investigation.

“A report would be sent to the Dean for MKCG for initiating necessary action against the perpetrators as per the guidelines issued by the UGC,” Vivek added.

Meanwhile, the medical college authorities have said that an investigation has been initiated following the receipt of the complaint from the Anti-Ragging Cell of the UGC.

Earlier, the victim student’s father had shared the incident on his X handle, drawing the attention of the authorities, including the Governor of Odisha and the Chief Minister.
