CIMS Bilaspur MBBS student attempts suicide by slitting wrist, neck after allegedly being slapped by faculty
Bilaspur: In an unfortunate incident, an MBBS student from Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Science (CIMS), Bilaspur allegedly attempted suicide by slitting his wrist and neck in his hostel room after being allegedly publicly slapped by an assistant professor, as per a local media report. The student was immediately admitted to ICU due to his critical condition.
The Sootr report adds that the student was verbally abused and slapped by an assistant professor when he failed to answer his questions correctly. The incident gained attention on social media, particularly on the platform 'X' where some doctors and medical students highlighted the issue and expressed their concerns.
Among them, one medical student said in a post, "A second-year #MBBS student from CIMS Bilaspur allegedly attempted suicide by slashing his neck and hand veins. The incident reportedly stemmed from verbal abuse and a public slap by a professor after the student failed to answer a question correctly."

The incident occurred on last week's Wednesday afternoon when a group of around 15 MBBS students, including this student, visited the orthopaedic ward to check patients along with their senior doctors. As per the sootr news report, the assistant professor reportedly asked these students a few questions. One of these questions was also asked to this student which he was unable to answer.
It is reported that the professor became angry and slapped Kamleshwar in front of the group and ordered him to leave. After feeling humiliated, the student went to his hostel room and attempted to end his life by first slitting the vein in his hand and then his throat.
When the matter became aware, he was immediately rushed to the hospital’s ICU, where he remains in critical condition. Later, the medical college authorities informed the police regarding the matter.
The incident sparked outrage among fellow medical students, who staged a protest near the casualty department on Wednesday evening, demanding strict action against the professor.
Regarding this, hospital superintendent Dr Lakhan Singh told the daily, "On getting the information, I went to the ICU to see him. His parents have also come. The police have also been informed about this matter. After this incident, MBBS students are demanding action against Dr. Thakur. In the evening, these people gathered near the casualty and demanded action."
This comes days after a 26-year-old MBBS medico who was a former student of CIMS allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in the institute's hostel room under mysterious circumstances. She was reportedly staying with one of her friends at the CIMS hostel after attending a relative's wedding.
Medical Dialogues reported that the deceased doctor was an MBBS student of the 2018 batch. After completing her medical studies at Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Science (CIMS), Bilaspur in 2023, the doctor was doing her internship at Sukhri Primary Healthcare Centre in Ambikapur.
