Delay in Disciplinary Action against Microbiology Professor, Medicos Continue Strike

Meanwhile, the students have also approached the Health Minister Anil Vij and Director of Medical Education and Research (DMER) with their demands and the Health Minister of the State has assured the students that strict action would be taken regarding the matter.

The students are hoping to get a response regarding the matter by Friday.

Medical Dialogues had recently reported that a couple of days ago a Microbiology Professor of the medical college allegedly used inappropriate gestures in front of the classroom filled with female students and also used abusive language at them. Soon the audio clip and video footage of the incident started circulating on social media platforms and several doctors expressed their solidarity with the students.

The students also approached the Director of the college, Dr. Rajiv Mahendru, and demanded strict action against the said Professor. Acting on the complaint, the college authorities withheld all the academic and administrative duties assigned to the professor and sent him to leave.

However, demanding that the Professor should be terminated, the medical college students initiated a strike in the matter and reached out to the Director regarding the issue. Speaking to Medical Dialogues, the Director Dr. Mahendru however had said that whatever was possible on the behalf of the college has been already done and the report of the College Committee has also been sent to the DMER for further action.

So, all the MBBS students of the medical college initiated a strike on the issue and started demanding the termination of the said professor. They are on strike since Tuesday ignoring the bad weather and heavy rainfall and they have stopped attending classes as well.

In the meantime, a team of the students had approached the Health Minister of Anil Vij, the Director of Medical Education and Research (DMER) and the National Medical Commission (NMC) seeking immediate action regarding the matter.

While commenting on the matter, a student from the 2019 MBBS batch told Medical Dialogues, "Health Minister Anil Vij sir has assured us that action would be taken in this matter. He has further informed us that our Director sir has been instructed for the same."

"He also told us to focus on our studies," the student added.

Meanwhile, the team which approached the DMER has been told that being a Class 1 Officer case, the only thing that DMER can do is send an inquiry report to the Chief Minister, which has been done already, informed the MBBS student.

"Now, an action would be taken in the matter after the CM processes it and sends it back to the DMER," the student added.

She further informed the daily that the Director of the medical college has assured of action within Friday.

Another student from the same batch informed the daily that if no action gets taken regarding the matter by Friday, the students might consider taking their strike to the next level, meaning by stopping all services.
