Facing Scrutiny over deficiencies, TN Medical Colleges reply to NMC notices

Salem: After receiving the show-cause notices from the National Medical Commission (NMC), 24 out of 34 medical colleges have sent their explanations to the notices on the deficiencies in faculty and infrastructure, Health Minister Ma Subramanian recently informed.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the National Medical Commission (NMC) slapped show cause notices on 34 Government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu for deficiencies in faculty and services, including labs and surgeries. The action was reportedly taken against all the government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, except Madras Medical College and Govt Coimbatore Medical College, and Hospital.
Among the 36 Government medical colleges (GMCs) in the State, altogether 34 colleges reportedly had a shortage of staff in up to 95% of the departments, including the departments of general medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, and dermatology. This was the most common deficiency that NMC highlighted in the show-cause notices issued to these medical colleges.
The showcase notices were issued based on the reports from the experts nominated. Issuing the notification on May 7, the Director of the Undergraduate Medical Education Board, Sukh Lal Meena, sought a written clarification from the colleges within a week.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, 24 out of 34 medical colleges have already submitted their explanation. Confirming this, State Health Minister Ma Subramanian further, while speaking to the reporters in the city, said, "Only 10 colleges need to submit their explanations, which will be sent soon."
Further on the issue of the shortage of doctors, the Minister said that 2,462 doctors have been appointed and steps will be taken to fill the vacancies. He also addressed the reports of how women NEET candidates were asked to remove their mangalsutra (thaali) before entering the centre.
"There was also an incident where a husband removed his wife's mangalsutra to help her write the exam, which is why we are insisting on the NEET exemption," replied the Minister.
