Kurnool medical college ragging complaint found fake, says administration

Kurnool: Following a ragging complaint filed with the National Medical Commission (NMC) by a first-year MBBS student at Kurnool Medical College, the college administration has claimed that the email was fake and that no such incident took place on campus.

According to the administration, the complaint triggered a police inquiry, which revealed that a senior student had allegedly sent the email using the junior’s name due to personal differences with the fellow seniors. The student has since been sent home from the hostel.

Medical Dialogues had reported that the concerned student, in his complaint, alleged that a third-year student had allegedly harassed and forced him to perform humiliating acts such as "wall-sitting." The harassment reportedly continued even after the junior resisted. Thereafter, the student submitted a complaint to the college principal on April 16 but did not name anyone in the complaint. With no action at that stage, the student later filed a complaint through the NMC’s online grievance portal.

Following this, the college administration acted and convened an emergency meeting of its Anti-Ragging Committee, under Principal Dr Lakshmi Chitti Narasamma. Statements of both the complainant and the accused student were recorded as part of an internal inquiry.

College principal Dr Lakshmi Chitti Narasamma told Deccan Chronicle, "The first-year student’s name was used to send an email alleging ragging, prompting a police inquiry." Speaking along with CI Sridhar, she said the investigation found the email to be fake.

The principal assured parents that no ragging incidents had occurred and appealed to senior students to act responsibly and maintain a supportive environment for juniors.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that altogether seven third-year MBBS students of Kakatiya Medical College at Warangal were suspended for six months after being found guilty of allegedly ragging some second-year students. The accused senior students allegedly forced the juniors to kneel on a boys' hostel terrace, and verbally abused them.
