Nashik: In a major development, the Maharashtra government has decided that the construction of the upcoming state-run medical college and hospital in Nashik will now fall under the administration of the state's medical education department, rather than the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS).

MUHS which oversees medical colleges in the state, will now hand over its control to the state medical education department after the decision was made recently to take over the new medical college and hospital in Nashik.

Currently, MUHS runs the Maharashtra Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (MPGIMER).

According to sources from the medical education department, as reported by TOI, MUHS lacks the necessary funds to support the college's development which is a major factor in the transition.

For the time being, the undergraduate medical college will operate from Nashik Municipal Corporation’s New Bytco Hospital, until the completion of a new facility on the city’s outskirts. The admission process for filling 50 seats in the medical college has started, and it is expected to be functional from October this year.

Medical dialogues team had previously reported that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its approval for two more new medical colleges in the State for 50 MBBS seats each in Maharashtra. Among the two medical colleges that received the Apex Medical Commission's nod, one is a government-run medical college in Nashik and the other one is a private medical institute in Aurangabad.

Speaking to TOI, a source from the state medical education department said "The building of the undergraduate medical college and hospital will be developed by the state govt and MUHS will transfer the proposed land for the medical college project to the state govt. The state govt will spend on salaries of faculties and Class III and IV employees of the UG college."
