Chandigarh- Paving the way for the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) to start MBBS courses for the first time, the institute has received its final approval for the development of a 100-bed medical college at Sarangpur. Till now, PGI has offered only postgraduate courses like MD and MS.

Along with this, the Advanced Cancer Institute, a trauma centre and outpatient department (OPD), which are part of the ambitious Sarangpur project, also got approval from the institute body. All these significant decisions were approved in the meeting held recently after a long gap of two years.

The meeting was chaired by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and all other members also attended the meeting. In the meeting, PGIMER has been directed to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the Sarangpur project and submit it to the Health Ministry.

On this, Deputy Director of Administration Pankaj Rai said that now the DPR, along with cost estimate and other project details, will be prepared and submitted to the ministry, reports HT.

Meanwhile, the institute body also approved 90 new posts for the main campus, which includes 80 senior residents, four faculty members and six demonstrators. Besides, the body also approved 637 posts for the 100-bed Ferozepur satellite centre, which includes 111 faculty and 526 non-faculty posts.

The Sarangpur project was aimed at significantly expanding the institute's healthcare and training infrastructure in the region. PGIMER had first announced plans to develop healthcare facilities in Sarangpur in 2017 to reduce the patient burden. After obtaining possession of the leased land from the UT administration in 2021, the proposal was revised to include a new MBBS college, an advanced cancer institute, a trauma centre and an outpatient department.
