Amaravati: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Andhra Pradesh, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its nod for 150 MBBS seats at Government Medical College at Nandyal.

The apex medical education regulatory body NMC has permitted the State to commence the MBBS admission in 150 seats at the medical college from the academic year 2023-2024.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that medical colleges at Eluru, Vizianagaram, Rajamahendravaram, Nandyal and Machilipatnam districts of the State will commence the MBBS admission process in 150 MBBS seats each.

It was expected that the NMC would soon give its permission after Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences gave its permission to commence academic classes in the five medical colleges.

Earlier, addressing the matter, Health Minister Vidadala Rajani had mentioned that four out of the five medical colleges had been inspected by NMC team, which expressed its satisfaction.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, after Vizianagaram medical college, NMC has given its nod for the Government Medical College at Nandyal. After getting the NMC nod for these two medical colleges, the Government is now working on the process to ensure permission from the Apex medical commission for the remaining three medical colleges on a fast track basis. This is the first step for the State to ensure setting up 17 new medical colleges in the State.

During its initial round of inspection around two months ago, NMC had turned down the State's proposal for grant of permission for the proposed new medical colleges. However, following this, the State expedited the construction work to ensure that the infrastructure of the proposed medical colleges met the NMC criteria.  This resulted in the NMC nod for the medical colleges in Vizianagaram and Nandyal.

Informing the Director of Medical Education (DME) about the permission for Nandyal Medical college, NMC stated, "The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC has examined the accessor's report and compliance physical verification report of April, 17 relating to availability of infrastructure facilities, laboratories, library, hospital facilities. The NMC has to approve the application for 150 MBBS seats at Nandyal."

Further, the Commission directed the DME for providing the entire infrastructure as per the NMC guidelines. Before getting the NMC clearance, the State had given its permission for 3,530 posts as per the NMC rules. Already the State has appointed superintendents and principals to the new medical colleges after upgrading the existing district hospitals as new medical colleges.
