NMC nod to 26 Seats in 4 PG medical specialities at GMC Ongole

Ongole: Bringing good news to the Postgraduate medical aspirants in Andhra Pradesh, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its permission for 26 new PG medical seats to the Government Medical College, Ongole.

Among these new PG medical seats, NMC has granted permission for nine new seats for the Pathology Department, another five for Radio Diagnosis, five for Ophthalmology, and Seven new seats for Paediatrics.

With this, the total number of PG medical seats in the medical college has now become altogether 84 seats. Formerly known as Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, GMC Ongole is affiliated with Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences.

Last year, the institute received NMC permission for five PG medical seats. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that by issuing the Letter of Permission (LoP) to the institute under Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the Apex medical commission had given permission for these PG medical seats for the academic year 2022-2023.

Back then, NMC had granted its permission for one seat in respiratory medicine course, two seats in Biochemistry, and two medical seats in forensic medicine.

In order to deal with the severe shortage of specialist doctors in Andhra Pradesh, the State Director of Medical Education submitted a report to the State back in 2021 seeking an increase of PG medical seats in medical colleges in Guntur, Nellore, Ongole, Kakinada, and Srikakulam.

As per the latest media report by The Hindu, now NMC has approved another 26 new PG medical seats to GMC Ongole, confirmed the Principal of the institute Dr. K Solomon Raju who also provided the breakup of the PG medical seats added to the institute.

Commenting on the matter, the Superintendent of the Government General Hospital, the teaching hospital attached to the medical college, Dr. M Bhagavan Naik told the Daily that the NMC nod for these new PG medical seats would go a long way in providing improved medical services to patients. 

According to the data shared by the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar earlier this year, Andhra Pradesh has altogether 2816 PG medical seats including 2666 MD/MS Diploma Seats and 150 DM/MCh seats.

Among these, there are 1184 Government MD/MS seats and 1482 Private seats. Further, there are 95 Government and 55 Private DM/MCh seats available in the State.
