Jammu: In a major boost to medical education in Jammu, Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri has recently been granted postgraduate status. This will enable the institution to start PG medical courses for the first time.

According to the ANI report, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved four MD Pediatrics seats for the current academic session.

Officials stated that the college's ability to offer paediatrics courses was due to the presence of a qualified professor in the department. Following a detailed inspection conducted last year, all four seats were approved, adds ANI.

This is a major milestone for the relatively new medical college located in a remote border district.

The upgradation of GMC Rajouri to a PG Medical College is expected to strengthen specialist healthcare services in Rajouri and surrounding areas, as well as help local students pursue advanced medical education in the region.

Meanwhile, the institution's infrastructure has also been strengthened, including lab upgrades, improved faculty numbers, and increased clinical exposure. High-tech gyms have also been built in both the boys' and girls' hostels. Two new 70-room hostels have been constructed at Khioora Hospital to accommodate interns and resident doctors.

The institution has achieved significant academic success. According to results announced by the University of Jammu, GMC Rajouri achieved a 100 per cent pass rate for its first MBBS batch as well as for its second-year (pre-final) students. This is the third consecutive year of achieving 100 per cent results, which the college described as a "hat-trick" of academic excellence. Not a single student failed the exam.

The college currently admits 100 MBBS students each year and has proposed increasing the number of seats to 150 for the 2026-27 academic session, pending approval from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The BSc Nursing College admits 60 students each year, bringing the total student strength to approximately 360.
