NMC says No increasing MS General Surgery Seats at GMCH Nagpur

Nagpur: In a setback to Nagpur based Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), the National Medical Commission (NMC) has denied giving its nod for increasing the Post Graduate seats of Department of Surgery, MS General Surgery.

Although the Surgery Department already has 22 PG medical seats, it had applied for 6 more seats. However, after conducting the inspection, the NMC team pointed out some deficiencies and denied granting permission for increasing the seats, reports The Hitavada.

In this regard, the Post Graduate Section of NMC, the apex medical education regulatory body wrote to the daily and stated, "As per your application the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) has reviewed the Assessor's report regarding faculty, their experience, publications, teaching facilities, infrastructure available in GMCH for starting of course MS (General Surgery) for the academic year 2022-23 but it found certain loopholes."

As per the latest media report by The Hitavada, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC referred to the loopholes including the scarcity of faculties in the Department. There was allegedly faculty deficiency of two Assistant Professors. MARB pointed out other problems including seven surgeries done on the day of assessment, 2,036 surgeries performed by 36 surgeons (28 faculty), the number of surgeries/faculty has been as few as less than 2 per week. Currently, 66 Post Graduate students remain present at the institute at any time (22x3).

The daily adds that the number of surgeries dropped even from COVID-19 period to non-COVID-19 period. Therefore, there is insufficient clinical workload at the department for training even the existing number of PG students. Taking all these aspects into consideration, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board of NMC took the decision of not granting more seats to the GMCH.

Confirming this development, the Dean of the medical college Dr Sudhir Gupta told the daily, ""The department has 22 Post Graduate seats. We had applied for 6 more seats. NMC team conducted the inspection but due to some deficiencies, we failed to get increased seats. The department shall continue to have 22 PG seats."

"We have not lost all the seats which is a thing of satisfaction but we should have got more seats. If increased, the department would have got more PG students and more hands too. The PG activity plays an important role. We will try to remove the loopholes," he added.
