Hyderabad: Almost 43 MBBS students attached to Osmania Medical College were rushed to Gandhi Hospital and Fever Hospital on Monday after they complained of nausea and diarrhoea due to food poisoning.

Besides the unfortunate incident, a shortage of beds at Osmania General Hospital to accommodate the affected medicos added to the plight. Many of the doctors have expressed their dissatisfaction over the fact that the medicos of the college had to be rushed to Gandhi Hospital and Fever Hospital, despite the fact that Osmania General Hospital was the nearest.

As per recent media reports, Principal Dr Shashikala Reddy has already instructed the concerned authorities to form an investigating committee to discover the truth behind the incident.

Elaborating about the same, Osmania Medical College Student Council Head, Sai Surender, a final year MBBS student stated that he first noticed the symptoms of vomiting and nausea in his roommate by Sunday evening. He later noticed that the entire hostel was showing similar symptoms.

After this, he immediately informed the principal that several residents of the boys' hostel were showing symptoms of food poisoning. He informed that during second Saturdays the mess at the college remains closed and students either have to make some arrangements for their food from outside or they have to rely on canteen food.

Soon the medicos, whose condition were deteriorating were rushed to the hospitals and were diagnosed with food poisoning. Among the medicos, some have suffered from severe symptoms while some have shown mild symptoms and are being treated on the premises.

Commenting on the entire incident, Surender told Deccan Chronicle, " It is exam time and so most of us are avoiding eating outside food these days. I ate the same food at the mess on Saturday but did get affected, maybe because I did not eat some particular items. Students started to experience the first episode at around 11 pm. Because the incubation period is eight hours for food poisoning symptoms to show, it seems like it was the lunch that started it."

Principal Reddy informed that the investigating committee has already taken samples of the food and water at the college to examine. The blood and stool samples of the affected students have also been collected and the result should be out in a few days.

Further, speaking on the issue of beds at Osmania General Hospital, Dr. Reddy stated that the authorities first took the medicos to Osmania General Hospital. However, there was not enough space and beds to accommodate them all, especially on such short notice. Hence, the medical officer decided to send the medicos to the Gandhi Hospital and Fever Hospital instead.

The doctors were disappointed over the lack of space in Osmania Hospital. Dr PS Vijayender, Convenor, Telangana Doctors Federation told The New Indian Express, "What is the use of calling Osmania Medical College a tertiary care centre if it can't even treat its own doctors for suspected food poisoning? Isn't this a failure of the Telangana government for not giving proper infrastructure and of the National Medical Council for giving permissions without proper infrastructure?"

He further questioned, "OGH is not suitable for the treatment of public representatives, government employees, the hospital's own department heads and students of the same college. Then who is it useful for?"
