Agra: In a major setback, SN Medical College (SNMC) recently faced rejection on its proposal to add 22 more MBBS seats. The proposal was denied by the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) which has now been replaced with the National Medical Commission (NMC)

According to TOI, the proposal was rejected citing various snags including lack of proper library and faculty among others.

The drawbacks were pointed out by the Council following an inspection. During the inspection, the team found that the institute had failed to fulfil the requisite academic parameters in order to increase the seats of MBBS courses.

Subsequently, the proposal to increase 22 seats in the MBBS course has been rejected. Meanwhile, the medical college has been instructed to meet the norms and reapply for the seat in the next academic year.

As of now, admissions will continue to be on the previously approved 128 seats at the state government-owned medical college.

Prior to this, five years back, the MCI had approved 22 temporary seats for the MBBS course at SNMC. In 2019, the allotment of 22 temporary seats were revoked following the non-fulfilment of standard norms and lack of proper infrastructure.

Commenting on the instant denial, Dr Sanjay Kala, SNMC principal, told TOI, "We are working to sort out the issues raised by the MCI. Soon, doctors will be appointed to fill the vacant faculty positions. Plan for developing a central library is also being worked out."

One of the oldest medical schools of India, the Sarojini Naidu Medical College (SNMC), is named after the first lady Governess of Uttar Pradesh, poet and freedom fighter, Bharat Kokila Smt. Sarojini Naidu. The college has a hospital attached to it named Sarojini Naidu Hospital. The institute provides Undergraduate, Postgraduate courses and Postgraduate Diplomas in different specializations.

The medical college possesses academic affiliation from Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University.
