Nagpur: The first batch of MBBS students at AIIMS Nagpur are still waiting to get their stipend arrears of around Rs 33,000 even though their internship ended around four months ago.

According to a recent TOI report, during the mandatory internship period, these medicos were paid Rs 27,000 per month even though the revised stipend of Rs 30,300 was applicable to them at the time.

Apart from this, the MBBS 1st batch students have also complained that their original degree is pending due to more than a year-long delay in holding their convocation ceremony by the institute.

As per the Times of India, after completing their final-year MBBS in December 2022, the first batch commenced their internship from January 2023 onwards. They were posted in AIIMS as well as on a rotation basis at Nandanvan Urban Primary Health Centre(UPHC) and at Bela PHC in Nagpur district. Further, the students had to serve for two months as their compulsory rural posting.

Meanwhile, commenting on the matter, some of the students informed TOI that some students said that they were assured of getting the final settlement before completion of the internship back in December last year.

"A letter was received from the Union health ministry regarding the revised stipend. Still, the administration paid us as per the pre-2017 norms. After we brought this to the notice of the concerned officials, we were told that the difference amount would be released soon. Now, none of us is staying on the campus and can’t follow up," the students told TOI..

They mentioned that they had been expecting to get the difference amount before they left the campus in February this year. "For a long time, the institute didn’t have a full-time director so we understood it would take time. But the post was filled up in February yet no decision has been taken," the students said.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that last year, the MBBS interns at AIIMS Nagpur were complaining that the administration did not pay any stipend to them for three months.

While the students were alleging that the absence of any permanent institutional head was contributing to their problems, the administration of AIIMS Nagpur had informed that the non-availability of funds was the actual reason why the MBBS students were not getting paid.
