Dehradun: In a shocking incident at Doon Medical College, medical students alleged that they found worms in a vegetable dish served in the hostel mess, raising serious food safety concerns.

The incident took place during dinner on Wednesday night when MBBS students arrived at the hostel mess. The staff served a yellow pea curry, and around 20 students had already started eating before the contamination was noticed.

The students alleged that the curry contained black coloured worms. However, many students mistook the insects for cumin seeds and consumed the food, while other students became suspicious and examined the dish closely, only to find worms in the curry.

The students immediately informed the authorities and protested inside the mess. To address the situation, the mess operator reportedly assured students that fresh food would be prepared, and a new batch of food was subsequently served.

As per a latest news report by Amarujala, students who had eaten the contaminated food vomited after knowing about the worms. Fortunately, no serious health issues were reported, and all affected students are said to be stable.

After the incident on Wednesday, the mess operator allegedly did not provide food to students on Friday. When students arrived for breakfast in the morning, they found the mess hall gate closed. After making inquiries, they learned that no food had been prepared that day. As a result, students had to arrange meals outside the campus.

Commenting on the matter, Director of Medical Education Dr Ajay Arya said that information regarding the incident has been sought and an inquiry has been ordered.

He said, "Such negligence in the mess can adversely affect students’ health. The matter will be investigated, and strict action will be taken against those found responsible.”
