Disaffiliation of MS Ramaiah medical college: Govt cancels order passed by RGUHS

Bengaluru: Controversy has erupted in Karnataka over the disaffiliation of MS Ramaiah medical college as the State Government has cancelled the disaffiliation order passed by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).

Issuing an order in this regard on August 26, the State Government clarified that the University had not taken its permission, which is mandatory for disaffiliation of an institute.

Meanwhile, the management of Ramaiah University are upset with such a stand by the Government and they are contemplating their legal options to challenge the cancellation order.

The cancellation order had been issued by the University on June 3 as the college had applied before RGUHS and asked for permission for joining its parent university MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, as a constituent college. Ramaiah University applied for this as they wanted to bring their medical college, nursing and physiotherapy together under one umbrella.

While commenting on this a spokesperson of the University told the Times of India, "The board of trustees of MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences took a decision that the medical college, nursing and physiotherapy be brought under it so that the entire group of higher educational institutions be under one umbrella as proposed by NEP. After five years of existence, we are allowed to have a constituent college. We had sent a letter to the higher education council and higher education government seeking permission. The council had held an inspection and gave a positive report."

"The higher education department also gave the order that we can be treated as constituent colleges. Later, we approached RGUHS for an NOC for being merged into Ramaiah university. Subsequently, we were disaffiliated. Now, the government has taken the stand that the medical education department should also have been informed for the purpose of disaffiliation from RGUHS," he added.

"There have been instances of other colleges being disaffiliated and becoming constituent colleges without any hassle. We'll take legal recourse," he further said.

Speaking to the daily about this, the Vice Chancellor of the University MK Ramesh mentioned, "Five years ago, other courses like dental college had moved out of RGUHS to MS Ramaiah University. Recently, they took approval from the higher education department to get medical college and physiotherapy also into their ambit. The order came from the higher education department, we put it through senate and syndicate and disaffiliation was approved. We had followed all the statutes."
