Indore: With an aim of producing specialist doctors having knowledge for treating different types of pain conditions, the Indore-based Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College has requested to the National Board of Examinations (NBE) for permission to commence fellowship in Pain Medicine.

Apart from this, the institute has also submitted its application for accreditation in spine surgery, adds FPJ. In fact, a few days back, an NBEMS assessor has already inspected the medical college facilities along with the infrastructure at its associated hospitals.

If permitted for FNB-Pain Medicine and FNB-Spine Surgery, then MGMMC will be the first institute in the State running these two year fellowship programmes.

Previously known as King Edward Medical School (KEMH), MGMMC had been established back in 1878, being one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia. This medical college along with its associated teaching hospital Mahararaja Yeshwantrao Hospital (M.Y. Hospital) provides Undergraduate and Postgraduate medical education to hundreds of students every year.

As per the latest media report by the Free Press Journal, after the medical college sought NBE accreditation for Fellowship programmes in Pain Medicine and Spine Surgery, Mumbai's pain management specialist Dr RP Gehdoo acted as an assessor of NBEMS for the medical college. After visiting the facility, he reportedly expressed his satisfaction over the college infrastructure.

While commenting on the matter, the Dean of the Medical College Dr. Sanjay Dixit told the daily, "We are seeking accreditation with NBEMS for fellowship in the specialty in Pain Medicine and spine surgery. Inspections for both have been done and the assessors have expressed satisfaction with the facilities. We are expecting approval from the board in a couple of months."
He further informed FPJ that if NBE gives its nod, MGMMC will be the first institute in Madhya Pradesh offering the fellowship programme, for which students travel abroad.

The daily also adds that National Accreditation Board of Hospitals and Health Care Providers (NABH) is expected to inspect the Super Specialty Hospital administration by the next month. For this, the hospital administration has already paid the inspection fees and before the inspection, the hospital administration will reportedly conduct a self assessment to ensure compliance with the NABH guidelines.
