More than 3,000 BDS students and 13,000 MBBS students in five States/UTs were ineligible for NEET PG and NEET MDS 2023.
New Delhi: Bringing massive respite to NEET PG 2023 and NEET MDS 2023 aspirants, the Health Ministry has extended the last date of completion of the MBBS internship to August 11 and BDS internship to June 30.
The ministry said that the decision was taken considering the future of over 13,000 MBBS students who were not eligible for the NEET PG 2023 exam due to the delayed internship.
More than 3,000 BDS students and 13,000 MBBS students in five States/UTs were ineligible for NEET PG and NEET MDS 2023.
The candidates had been pushing for an extension in the NEET PG 2023 exam by two to three weeks to reduce the gap between the result declaration and the counselling process. Seeing no resolution being provided by the concerned authorities on the matter despite several requests and deliberations, the doctors under the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) staged a protest yesterday at Jantar Mantar.
The NEET PG 2023 exam is scheduled for March 5. The aspirants sought the exam to be postponed by May-June.
As per the calendar issued by the National Board of Examinations, the NEET PG 2023 results will be out around March 31, and the counselling process will start in July 2023. Moreover, according to the previous eligibility criteria announced by NBE, the NEET PG 2023 candidates were required to complete their mandatory one-year MBBS internship on or before March 31.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that FAIMA had written to the Union Health Minister and pointed out that around 10,000 NEET PG aspirants were ineligible for appearing in the exam. The association urged the authorities for postponing the exam by 2-3 months and reconsider the eligibility criteria.
Thereafter, taking note of the fact that thousands of candidates were ineligible to appear in the examination, NBE extended the Internship Deadline. Earlier on January 13, the cut-off date was extended from March 31 to June 30.
Even after the postponement of the exam, several thousands of candidates remained ineligible for the exam.
In a series of tweets, the Ministry of Health announced the extension to the internship deadline for NEET PG and NEET MDS aspirants.
"Considering the future of more than 13,000 MBBS students across five states/UTs who were not eligible for NEET PG 2023 exam due to delayed internship, the Health Ministry has decided to extend the last date of completion of internship for eligibility to August 11, 2023," the Health Ministry said in a tweet.
