New Medical Colleges in UP: Cabinet nod for transferring assets, manpower to Medical Education Department

Lucknow: Taking another step further to start new medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh, the State Cabinet on Friday gave its nod for transferring of assets and manpower under the Health Department to the Medical Education Department.

These new medical colleges are coming up in the districts including Amethi, Auraiya, Kanpur Dehat, Kushinagar, Kaushambi, Gonda, Chandauli, Pilibhit, Bulandshahr, Bijnor, Lakhimpur Kheri, Lalitpur, Sultanpur and Sonbhadra, adds HT.

These colleges are coming up under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of establishment of new medical colleges with existing district/referral hospitals. 

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that former Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan had informed the Rajya Sabha that under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for "Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals", altogether 27 new medical colleges had been approved in Uttar Pradesh.

"Under three phases of the above Scheme, the establishment of 27 new medical colleges has been approved in Uttar Pradesh, as proposed by the State Government. However, no proposal is received from the State Government of Uttar Pradesh for establishment of new medical college in Ballia district under the said scheme", the Minister had informed.

As per the data shared by the former Minister, altogether 14 new medical colleges are coming up in Uttar Pradesh under the third phase of the Central Scheme. Earlier this year, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had directed to expedite construction work of new medical colleges in the state. 

While reviewing the status of various construction projects being undertaken on the proposal of the Public Works Department (PWD), Yogi had said, "The state government is determined towards achieving the vision of 'One district-One medical college'. It is top priority of the government to make medical colleges functional in all the districts."

He had said that construction of medical colleges needs to be expedited in Bulandshahr, Lakhimpur Kheri, Gonda, Auraiya, Lalitpur, Sonbhadra, Kanpur Dehat, Pilibhit, Bijnor, Chandauli, Kaushambi, Kushinagar and Sultanpur districts.

Working on the "one district, one medical college" programme, the State is working on starting new medical colleges in by attaching the colleges to the existing district hospitals. This is expected to improve the clinical facilities in all the districts in the State and more MBBS and Speciality seats will be added to the State's seat matrix.

Since the new medical colleges are being attached to the district hospitals, the hospitals, referral hospitals and manpower working at these hospitals will now become part pf the medical colleges for a period of three years and their attachment can further get extended up to 5 years.

As per the latest media report by Hindustan Times, taking another step to commence these new medical colleges, the State Cabinet on Friday gave its nod for transferring of assets and manpower under the Health Department to the Medical Education Department.
