NMC gives permission for adding 4 MD Psychiatry Seats at MGM Medical College
Indore: The Postgraduate seats in the Psychiatry department of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, Indore is going to increase since the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its nod for adding four seats to the department and therefore taking the total number of MD Psychiatry seats from six to ten.
Issuing a letter of intent in this regard, the Apex medical education regulatory body NMC has allowed the MGM authorities for admitting 10 students from the current academic session i.e. 2022-2023.
While the medical college had applied for the seat increase back in December last year, the NMC nod comes after the review board members inspected the college back in June 2022, adds TOI.

Formerly known as King Edward Medical School, MGM Medical College, Indore is one of the oldest medical colleges in India. The college has been offering MBBS courses since 1948 and consequently PG medical courses were introduced in the medical college back in 1953. Currently, the medical college offers undergraduate medical education in around 250 MBBS seats and there are a total number of 240 PG medical seats available at the institute.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, now the NMC has given its permission for increasing four seats in the MD Psychiatry department from this academic session. In this regard, the Dean of the institute, Dr. Sanjay Dixit told the daily, "NMC granted permission for increase of MD (Psychiatry) seats from the current academic session 2022-23."
However, the Commission in its Letter of Intent has also referred to some deficiencies including lack of experience of associate professor, less senior resident etc. In spite of these deficiencies, the Commission approved for increasing the PG seats as it took note of the 93 IPD patients inflow on a daily basis and over 100 OPD's.
While commenting on this, Dr. Dixit added, "In government institutions, the 10 per cent deficiencies of staff are allowed. So, let's say we have 22 sanctioned posts of psychiatry but 1 SR post is vacant. It is within prescribed limits. So, for government institutions like MGM, the permission is granted for seat increase."
