NMC Seat Matrix 2026-27: 2,384 PG medical, SS seats in West Bengal, 218 in MS ObGyn, 199 in MD Medicine
Kolkata: A total of 2,384 postgraduate and super-speciality medical seats are available in West Bengal for the academic year 2026-27, according to the latest seat matrix released by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
The seats include postgraduate MD and MS courses, along with Doctorate of Medicine (DM), Master of Chirurgiae (MCh), and diploma courses across government and private medical colleges and deemed universities in the state.
As per the list, M.S. Obstetrics and Gynaecology has the highest number of seats with 218 seats, M.D. General Medicine has 199 seats, M.S. General Surgery has 197 seats, and M.D. Anaesthesiology has 195 seats. M.D.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the NMC released a seat matrix showing a total of 63,177 MD, MS, Diploma, DM and MCh medical seats for the academic year 2026-27. However, the Apex Medical Commission has clarified that the seat matrix does not include seats related to applications received for an increase in the intake of existing PG courses or for the commencement of new PG courses for the academic year 2026-27.
In a detailed course-wise distribution of the seats, M.D. Paediatrics has 179 seats; M.D. Pathology has 106 seats; M.D. Radio-Diagnosis/Radiology has 79 seats; M.D. Community Medicine/Social & Preventive Medicine has 83 seats; M.D. Biochemistry has 62 seats; M.D. Microbiology has 58 seats, and M.D. Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy/Dermatology has 57 seats.
Further, M.D. Respiratory Medicine/Tuberculosis & Respiratory Diseases has 54 seats; M.D. Psychiatry has 54 seats; M.D. Physiology has 51 seats; M.D. Anatomy has 47 seats, and M.D. Radiation Oncology/Radiotherapy has 40 seats. M.D. Pharmacology has 55 seats, while M.D. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has 16 seats.
M.D. Forensic Medicine and Toxicology/Forensic Medicine has 21 seats; M.D. Tropical Medicine has 9 seats; M.D. Master of Public Health - Epidemiology has 7 seats; M.D. Geriatrics has 3 seats, while M.D. Emergency Medicine, M.D. Immuno Haematology and Blood Transfusion, and M.D. Laboratory Medicine have 3, 2, and 2 seats, respectively.
Meanwhile, M.S. Ophthalmology has 101 seats, M.S. Orthopaedics has 102 seats, and M.S. Otorhinolaryngology/ENT has 77 seats.
The list also includes D.M. Neurology, which has 19 seats, while D.M. Medical Gastroenterology has 14 seats and D.M. Nephrology has 13 seats. D.M. Endocrinology has 11 seats, while D.M. Cardiac Anaesthesia has 9 seats and D.M. Cardiology has 27 seats.
Further, M.Ch. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has 19 seats, M.Ch. Neurosurgery has 18 seats, M.Ch. Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery has 14 seats; M.Ch. Paediatric Surgery has 13 seats, and M.Ch. Urology has 21 seats; M.Ch. Surgical Oncology has 5 seats, M.Ch. Head and Neck Surgery has 4 seats, and M.Ch. Surgical Gastroenterology has 1 seat.
The Diploma courses include Diploma in Anaesthesiology (D.A.) and Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (D.G.O.) with 23 seats each, followed by Diploma in Ophthalmology (D.O.) with 21 seats, Diploma in Orthopaedics (D.Orth.) with 8 seats, Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (D.L.O.) with 5 seats, Diploma in Clinical Pathology (D.C.P.) with 4 seats and Diploma in Paediatrics (D.C.H.) with 2 seats.
The remaining D.M. courses include D.M. Clinical Haematology with 7 seats, D.M. Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology with 5 seats, D.M. Clinical Pharmacology with 3 seats, D.M. Critical Care Medicine with 2 seats, D.M. Hepatology with 5 seats, D.M. Infectious Disease with 5 seats, D.M. Pulmonary Medicine with 4 seats, and D.M. Neonatology with 2 seats.
