2 held for assaulting doctor, medical staff in Madurai hospital
Madurai: Two relatives of a patient who were involved in assaulting a doctor and other staff members of a private multi-speciality hospital have been arrested in Madurai on Wednesday.
According to a media report in the Times of India, the incident took place around 4AM on Wednesday morning, when one of the accused admitted his son with injuries to an emergency ward in the hospital. The doctor suggested performing a surgery. However, the father and another relative of the patient verbally abused the staff of the hospital, including doctors and nurses and prevented them from giving any treatment.

They also physically assaulted and threatened a doctor, reports the TOI.
The police stated that the two men who caused the assault were drunk. The hospital officials had subsequently filed a complaint in connection with the incident.
Following that, the Mattuthavani police registered a case under sections 294(b), 323, 506(ii) of IPC r/w 48(3) of the Tamil Nadu Hospital Protection Act and arrested the duo. The accused have been identified as a 31-year-old and 47-year-old residents of Thathaneri.
The hospital officials stated that legal action was taken against the relatives of the patient to ensure that similar incident of assault on doctors and other medical staff do not take place in the future.
In a similar incident that took place in December, 2019, a patient's kin assaulted a PG doctor in Government Rajaji Hospital. After the doctors protested against the incident, legal action was taken against the kin of the patient.
The Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about a similar assault incident where a doctor in Dombivali in Thane district was beaten up allegedly by the kin of a 9-month-old child who died during treatment. The child was brought there for treatment and had eventually died, due to which the kin got angry and beat up the doctor.
