Dehradun: Observing that the doctors are absent from their duties during Out Patient Department hours (between 8 am to 2 pm), the Principal of Government Doon Medical College and Hospital (GDMCH), Dr Ashutosh Sayana has issued notice to the Head of the Five Departments of the Hospital.

While seeking explanation from the doctors, the Hospital chief has further mentioned in the notice appropriate action would be taken against them after investigating the reasons for the absence of the doctors.

Such a decision was taken by the college authorities after Dr Sayana inspected the hospital last week. During the inspection, he noted that several junior doctors were absent from their positions in the OPD.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, recently the contract period of 610 contractual staff at the hospital, who had been hired during the pandemic, has ended. This has led to a huge "staff crunch" at the GDMCH. The daily further adds that even though the Hospital has already written to the Government in this matter, no solution has been provided in this regard yet.

However, as per the authorities, a proposal of re-recruiting the contractual staff would be presented in the cabinet for dealing with the issue of staff crunch.

At such an outset, the inspection of the Principal found some junior doctors absent from their posts and therefore issued the show cause notice. While commenting on the matter,

Dr KC Pant, chief medical superintendent, Doon Hospital told
TOI
, "During the inspection of the OPD, it was found that some doctors were missing from duty. This was causing delays and inconvenience in patient care. The HoDs have now been warned to ensure that all doctors are present on duty and the OPD runs smoothly."
However, as per the patients, absence of doctors during duty hours is nothing new and referring to the recent notice, some of the patients told the daily that the management should do "more than just issuing a notice" in this regard.
Referring to the problem, long queues, and slow process, such a patient from the OPD told TOI, "Even if we come to the hospital really early to be the first in the patient queue, we still have to wait for hours for the doctor to see us. The OPD almost never starts on time. I am a blood pressure patient. My wife suffered a leg fracture last month. It used to take us half a day for one consultation."
